The Wave

It had been the topic of speculation for years that the impact of a meteorite or asteroid in one of the earth’s oceans had the potential of generating a tsunami of cataclysmic proportions. On September 4, 2025 such an event occurred at 3 o’clock in the morning when asteroid Vivian slipped right past our early detection protocols and was well into our solar system giving us approximately 15 hours until impact someplace in the central Pacific Ocean.

As soon as it was discovered scientists from around the world immediately started predicting its mass and found it to be moderately sized 5-6 km in diameter. Its impact was computed to be somewhere between the Hawaiian Islands and the West Coast of America. It would likely cause a tsunami that would wash out the coastal cities of Canada, the U.S., and Mexico. It would also cover most of the inhabited coastal areas of the Hawaiian Islands.

A lot of the America was sleeping peacefully at 3 am, so few knew but by the early morning there was no way that you could avoid the news. The TV is turned on to the sound of an alarm, “This is a signal from the emergency broadcast system. Last night at approximately 3 am a moderately sized asteroid hit in the Pacific Ocean 500 miles east of Hawaii. The impact has created a tsunami that will hit Hawaii within hours and the complete west coast of America five or six hours later.”

Steven, Nick, and their girlfriends; Pam and Sue were staying on the beach in an activity they called glamping. The tent was rather larger and inflatable and had all the comforts of home thanks to their generator. Steven spoke first, “This has to be some kind of joke like that old War of the Worlds Program that caused people to commit suicide.”

Sue responded looking at him her eyes in a panic, “I don’t think so Steven, no one would lie about something like this.”

Pam, starting to cry said “Maybe there is a way to make it out of the wave’s path before it gets here. They should have told us a lot earlier.”

Nick for the first time chimed in working through his shock and dismay, “There is no way to escape it the airports will be jammed and the highways worse. How can they know for sure that the wave won't dissipate like they sometimes do?”

Thus, the four denying what was taking place went back inside their tent to watch the news, hope for the best and seeing how things would unfold. The wave didn't arrive at its predicted time in Hawaii so the four were starting to relax and the video showed the people in Hawaii, crying and celebrating their good fortune.

Nick said to the others, “See the wave must have dissipated just like I said.”

Steven responded looking into Nick’s eyes, “Thank God you're right this time, Nick!”

Pam crying again said, “Look the water is disappearing on their beaches.” People were running out where the water used to be starting to look for starfish and other prizes until a massive wave twenty to fifty times larger than anything seen before covered the Hawaiian Islands in a few seconds and just kept going. Arial footage showed nothing at all was left and the whole population was dead.

The four friends became very angry and started to blame the government and like many others started running and vandalizing everything in sight.

Steven said, “Fuck them they left us all to die while the government officials from every country are in the air in their safe havens.”

After the four destroyed everything in their path for a while they began to realize nothing changed and nobody seemed to care. They eventually ran across a couple of police officers on their journey and begged, pleaded, and did everything they could think of to get them to help.

One officer said, “There is nothing left and nowhere to escape. I'd suggest that you get your say whatever last words you need to because you're running out of time.” After the officer's remaining words the four of them from a distance watched the two officers shake hands and embrace and then the one officer shot his best friend and partner in the head before turning the gun on himself.

The four of them realized that there was no more hope and became very depressed. The tsunami was just reported to be two hours away so the four of them looked for some dark place that they hoped they could hold up in and somehow survive the catastrophe. All the news channels were now signed off many returning to their homes for the final moment and hoping against hope that somehow, they would survive.

Steven hugging Sue and looking deeply into her eyes said, “Sue, I really do love you and I am so sorry that we will never be able to have a life together as we planned.” He took off a ring that he always wore on his pinky and put it on her finger.

She said, “I love you too Steve, and am going to miss you and my family."

Nick grabbed Pam’s hand but spoke to them all, “You know we are never going to survive this no matter what we do so how about we all just go back to the beach and watch this fucking wave come in.”

Sue responded to Nick, “Stop saying that there is always a chance, and at least we should die trying. We owe it to each other and our families.”

Pam taking Nick’s position for the first time answered her, "Didn’t you see what happened to those poor people in Hawaii? The whole goddam state is gone, and everyone is dead."

Sue started back, “There is always hope.”

Steven stopped her, “Sorry Sue. Nick and Pam are right. There is no coming back from this and the whole west coast and maybe the world dies together. I think the officers were right, Nick and Pam are right, it's better if we just accept our fate and prepare ourselves.

Now both girls started to cry uncontrollably and began to lose their minds with the existential fears of death and dread. Steve quickly took out the gun that the second police officer had slipped to him and quickly shot his two female companions in the head to save them from the trauma they would inevitably be experiencing.

Nick instantly said to Steven, “Why did you do that, what the fuck did you do?”

Steven simply replied, “I love them, and you know why I did it." They pulled their bodies over to the side and made them as comfortable as they possibly could, and Steven was thankful he was able to spare them from the fear of death.

Steven then said looking toward his friend, “Nick let's take our last trip down to the beach together and watch the last wave we will ever see crash in and carry us to infinity.”

So that’s what they did, they went down to the beach and waited together. The wave was way past its estimated landfall, and they were still there on the beach waiting in the morning when they heard the message on the radio, “Thank God for his interventions on our behalf and stopping the tragedy that awaited us all. More specifically, for the shoaling process which caused the wave to slow down by experiencing pressure from the seabed as the water got shallower until the wave slowly dissipated."

Nick with tears of grief in his eyes said, "That's why the wave was delayed before it hit Hawaii it was already slowing."

Steven said in response now crying also, “How could I have known.”

Nick just walked away and never looked back. About a minute later, he heard the last bullet discharge from the officer's revolver.

Jeremiah 29:12 says, “I know the plans I have for you says the Lord plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Romans 15:13 says “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope through his power."
