Shadowed Obsession

Eric van Cult stood hidden in the shadows, his sharp eyes following every movement of the woman who captivated him in ways no one had in centuries. Annabelle strolled confidently down the sidewalk outside her workplace, the streetlights casting a soft glow over her sleek, dark brown hair. She was the president and CEO of one of the most exclusive high-end companies in the city, a retailer specializing in women’s luxury lingerie and Prada bags. She had the air of someone in control of their life, exuding both power and grace.

To any passerby, she was a woman of confidence, but to Eric, there was something more—something that drew him to her. The centuries had hardened him, dulled the sensations that had once made him feel alive, but watching her brought back emotions he hadn’t felt in far too long. Though Annabelle had no idea he existed, he had been watching her for weeks, his fascination growing stronger with each passing night.

Eric wasn’t sure what it was that first made him follow her. Perhaps it was her beauty or the way she commanded attention without even trying. Or maybe it was the way she seemed to stand apart from everyone else, living in a world that others could never touch. Whatever the reason, Eric couldn’t help himself. Night after night, he found himself lurking in the shadows, trailing her as she left work, walking her home in silence, always keeping a safe distance.

Tonight was no different. He watched as Annabelle left the towering glass building she worked in, dressed impeccably in a tailored black coat and heels. Her steps were purposeful, her face calm. He remained at a distance, his gaze never leaving her, feeling the stir of emotions that he had long thought dead.

But there was also a sense of dread. Eric was no stranger to the dangers that lurked in the city, especially for someone as vulnerable as Annabelle. Vampires like him weren’t the only threat; humans could be just as dangerous. He couldn’t protect her if something happened, not without revealing himself. And that was a risk he wasn’t willing to take. Not yet.

Still, the compulsion to follow her was stronger than his logic. He could no longer deny that he was obsessed. But it wasn’t just her beauty or the intoxicating scent of her blood that drew him in—it was her strength, her determination. She was unlike anyone he had encountered in his centuries-long existence, and that terrified him as much as it intrigued him.

Eric moved silently through the streets, keeping a careful distance, his inhuman reflexes allowing him to remain unseen. Annabelle’s pace was steady as she neared her apartment. She had no idea she was being watched, and that made Eric’s heart ache. He could never reveal what he truly was to her. The world she lived in was one of light, and his world was drenched in darkness. How could he ever bring her into that?

Just as Annabelle reached the intersection, something went terribly wrong. Eric saw the car barreling down the road too fast, the driver clearly unaware or uncaring about the red light ahead. Annabelle, engrossed in her thoughts, didn’t notice the danger until it was too late.

Time slowed. Eric’s vampire instincts kicked in. Without a second thought, he surged forward, faster than any human could ever hope to move. In a blur, he was at her side, scooping her up in his arms as the car screeched and swerved to avoid the impact, crashing into a streetlight instead.

Annabelle’s body was limp in his arms, unconscious, her head tilted back as her dark hair spilled over his shoulder. Eric’s heart pounded as he looked down at her pale face. Blood trickled from a cut on her forehead where her head had collided with the pavement when she fell. He had acted just in time to save her life, but she was injured.

For a moment, he considered taking her home, watching over her until she woke. But the cut on her forehead needed medical attention, and as much as he wanted to keep her close, he knew he couldn’t risk her health. So, he made a decision.

In a flash, Eric sped through the streets, cradling Annabelle’s unconscious form in his arms. The city blurred around them as he moved at an impossible speed, unseen by the human eye. Within moments, he arrived at the nearest hospital. He slowed his pace as he approached the entrance, carefully placing Annabelle on a bench outside the emergency room doors. Before anyone could notice him, he slipped into the shadows, watching from a distance as a concerned nurse rushed to her side.

The next hours felt agonizingly slow as Eric watched through the hospital windows. Annabelle was admitted quickly, doctors rushing to tend to her head injury. Eric clenched his fists at his sides, knowing there was nothing he could do but wait. He couldn’t go inside—not without raising too many questions. The nurses and doctors would wonder who he was, how he had brought her there without being seen. His presence would only complicate things.

So, he waited.

The hours passed, and as dawn approached, Eric could feel the familiar pull of the sun. He needed to leave before the first rays of light touched the horizon. But he didn’t want to leave Annabelle alone. Not like this.

He made a silent vow then. He would return as soon as the sun set. He would watch over her until she was safe, until he knew she would be all right. He couldn’t explain the emotions that gripped him so tightly, but the thought of anything happening to her was unbearable.

As he turned to leave, Eric cast one last glance at her hospital window. She was asleep, her face peaceful despite the bandages wrapped around her head. A part of him wished he could stay by her side, to be the one she relied on when she woke up, but he knew that wasn’t possible. Not yet.

With a heavy heart, Eric vanished into the shadows, retreating to his safe haven before the sun rose, but his thoughts never strayed far from Annabelle.
