My Ex is a Burden...

Mariana and Gabriel always seemed like the perfect couple. In the beginning, life flowed smoothly, with a simple but satisfying routine. However, after two and a half years, Mariana began to feel like something was missing. Gabriel seemed content with everything. He would talk about how blessed he felt to have such a stable life, but for Mariana, that wasn’t enough anymore. She longed for something more—more excitement. She listened to her friends talk about trips, adventures, achievements, and started to despise her “quiet” life. Gabriel’s monotony, which had once reassured her, now seemed suffocating.

She recalled the words of a pastor who, in a sermon, mentioned how marriage reflected God’s commitment to humanity. "True love requires patience and sacrifice," he had said. But instead of comfort, Mariana felt a growing pressure. Was she incapable of fulfilling her role in this commitment?

In the months leading up to their separation, Mariana silently tried to encourage Gabriel to change. She suggested new activities, new classes, even new churches where they could get more actively involved. But Gabriel remained the same, always responding calmly:

"Oh Mariana! I'm happy with what we have. We don’t need more than this."

Gabriel believed the stability they had was a blessing, a reflection of his faith in God and in marriage. He thought that keeping life simple, dedicated to work and church, was enough. "God asks us for patience," he often said.

Mariana, however, felt that this “contentment” was a prison. Was she wrong for wanting more? She wondered if her dissatisfaction meant her faith was weak, that she wasn’t fulfilling her role in the marriage. These doubts tormented her, but instead of seeking spiritual answers, she started drifting away even more.

Their arguments, when they happened, were always mild but loaded with tension. Gabriel didn’t understand why Mariana was so restless. To him, marriage was a commitment to God, and part of that commitment was accepting the more stable and simple phases of life.

"Mari, we have what we need. Why look for something beyond that?" he would ask, trying to keep his tone gentle, but noticing the growing frustration in her eyes.

Mariana felt that each of Gabriel’s questions was a test she could no longer pass. Every gesture of affection felt like a chain, binding her to a life she no longer wanted. They spent more and more time in silence, with Gabriel making small attempts to reconnect, but Mariana was already emotionally distant.

One night, after a failed attempt to watch a movie together—something that used to be a tradition between them—Mariana finally spoke. The words came out hesitant, but filled with a certainty she had built up over the months.

"Gabriel, I... don’t know if I can keep going like this."

Gabriel, surprised, remained silent for a few moments, trying to process what she had just said. He knew things had been different, but he never imagined she was considering ending it. To him, marriage was a sacred pact, something to be worked on, not abandoned. But Mariana’s words indicated she had already made up her mind.

Mariana thought breaking up with Gabriel would be the final chapter of a difficult phase. He seemed unambitious, trapped in a monotonous life. She craved more, believing that by freeing herself from him, she would finally find her own path. In the first few days, she felt relieved. But that relief didn’t last long.

A few weeks after the breakup, Gabriel went from being an irrelevant person to a public example of resilience. He got involved in community projects, received praise for his volunteer work, and was even mentioned at events they used to attend together. Gabriel seemed to have become everything she had envisioned for herself. Each new success of his felt like a reminder that she had failed, not just with him, but with her own life.

It was during a family lunch that her mother, unaware of the impact of her words, delivered the phrase that shattered her:

"Sweetie, maybe breaking up with Gabriel was the best thing you could’ve done. Look how free he is now. He finally found what he was looking for, right?"

Free. The word echoed in her mind. How could he be free? Was he trapped? Oppressive? Was she holding him back from becoming who he was meant to be? The words reverberated, and from that moment, Mariana began to see each of Gabriel’s gestures as a calculated revenge. It wasn’t just success; he was getting back at her, showing the world that he could be incredible—without her.

After her mother’s comment, Mariana plunged into paranoia. Gabriel wasn’t just "finding himself," as everyone seemed to say—he was deliberately seeking revenge. What else could explain such a sudden transformation? It was obvious: he had calculated every move to show everyone that the real problem in the relationship was her. He had transformed with the sole intention of humiliating her.

Gabriel’s achievements multiplied, and Mariana began to see each one as a personal attack. He appeared in photos with mutual friends, attended charity events they used to go to together, always with a serene and radiant smile. With each new social media post, Mariana felt her sanity deteriorate. He seemed omnipresent, not just in physical spaces, but in every conversation, in every interaction she had.

"Have you seen Gabriel? He’s so different now..."

Those words, heard from acquaintances and even coworkers, echoed in her mind like sentences of condemnation. They weren’t just talking about him; in her view, they were comparing him to what she "prevented him from becoming." Gabriel was playing a cruel game; a psychological torture that only she could see.

She began to isolate herself. First, it was social media. The simple act of seeing one of Gabriel’s new accomplishments filled her with anxiety, making her feel like he was winning a battle she didn’t even know she was fighting. Then came the social gatherings. Mariana started avoiding any situation where Gabriel's "rise" might be mentioned. Even her own friends became threats, because in her mind, they all seemed to be on his side, admiring his transformation.

Her mind became filled with distorted memories. She began recalling moments from their relationship where, now, she thought she might have been the "villain." Maybe she had suffocated him. Maybe it was true that she had held him back from shining. Gabriel’s newfound success seemed to confirm these silent suspicions. But to Mariana, this wasn’t redemption—it was revenge.

The height of her paranoia came when she decided to confront him. At a charity event, where she knew he’d be, Mariana watched him from a distance. Gabriel was surrounded by people, as usual, radiating his new serene and altruistic personality. The sight of it all consumed her. She approached him, anxious, hoping for an answer to what was tormenting her.

But when Gabriel saw her, he smiled calmly and greeted her with a lightness that Mariana interpreted as disdain. He was no longer emotionally invested. In that moment, Mariana realized that to him, she no longer mattered. This realization shattered her inside. The person she once knew now seemed unreachable, out of her grasp, and that made her feel even more crushed.

That night, Mariana experienced her first panic attack. Her heart raced, her breathing became uncontrollable, and her mind was flooded with chaotic, confused thoughts. She tried to scream, but the words got stuck in her throat. Gabriel had won, not through direct actions, but by transforming into someone she could never be: a person who moved on without looking back.

The pressure became too much for Mariana. The spiral of obsessive thoughts, the constant idea that Gabriel was manipulating everyone around them, and the perception that she was the problem culminated in a nervous breakdown. That first panic attack was only the beginning. In the days that followed, Mariana barely slept, and even simple daily tasks became impossible to complete. Gabriel occupied her mind oppressively, and she saw no escape.

After yet another emotional collapse, her family took her to the hospital. The diagnosis was clear: nervous exhaustion, caused by accumulated emotional stress. She would need immediate treatment and, most importantly, rest. While hospitalized, the doctors explained that she had reached a critical point, and her recovery depended primarily on distancing herself from what was fueling this destructive obsession.

During the weeks she spent in the hospital, Mariana had time to reflect, but her thoughts were murky, confused. All she could feel was a mixture of frustration and despair. How could Gabriel move on, thriving, while she—the one who had ended the relationship—was falling apart? The irony of the situation was too bitter to bear.

The truth was that Mariana couldn’t accept Gabriel’s new version. To her, he wasn’t a man transformed for the better, but someone silently avenging her, suffocating her with his perfection. His success constantly reminded her of her own failure, as if each new achievement was a hidden message that she wasn’t good enough. The pressure from society, from social media, from mutual friends, and even her own family—all seemed to be conspiring to push her into this breakdown.

When she was discharged, Mariana knew she couldn’t return to her life as it was before. She needed a radical break, a complete cut-off. It wasn’t just about Gabriel, but everything and everyone connected to him. The city they lived in, the friends they shared, the social circles—all of it needed to be left behind.

Mariana made the decision to move away. She distanced herself from everyone, including her own family for a while. She blocked Gabriel on social media, cut ties with mutual friends, and even avoided places where she knew he might show up. The process was painful, but necessary. To try and rebuild her sanity, Mariana needed to escape the oppressive specter Gabriel had become in her mind.

But even with the physical distance, the emotional scars remained. Gabriel continued to live in her thoughts, not as a loving memory, but as the worst ex ever. Not because he chased after her or sought revenge directly, but because in his rise, he destroyed her in a silent and cruel way.

In moments of introspection, Mariana wondered if she would ever be able to live without thinking of Gabriel. His success, his "new self," was a constant presence, a reminder of everything she couldn’t control. And though she was in a new city, starting a new life, she knew that part of her would always be trapped in that spiral of obsession, where the man she once loved became her greatest torment.

She continued her life, but with a shadow hanging over her. Gabriel, the man who was perfect in everyone’s eyes, would forever be the ex who pushed her to the edge. Not because he tried to win her back or directly sought revenge, but because he flourished in a way that made her feel insignificant.

A Few Months Later, Mariana had already started over in another city. She was slowly recovering, attending a local church, and participating in activities to keep her mind occupied. But one day, as she left the supermarket, she spotted a familiar figure in the distance. It was Gabriel. He wasn’t on a volunteer mission, he wasn’t surrounded by friends, there were no flashing cameras or admiring smiles.

Gabriel was sitting alone on a bench, with a lost and dejected expression.

Curious and confused, Mariana watched him for a moment. This wasn’t the "new Gabriel" that everyone knew. He seemed... vulnerable. After hesitating, she approached him and called out.

"Gabriel? What are you doing here?" she asked, trying to keep her voice steady.

"Mari..." Gabriel sighed deeply, before confessing something that would shake Mariana's world. "I'm not the person everyone thinks I am. All this transformation... it wasn’t real. I was trying to prove to myself that I could be someone better... to overcome what I lost. But honestly, I was lost the whole time."

Gabriel then revealed that after the breakup, his change had been a desperate attempt to cope with the emptiness he felt. He threw himself into volunteer work and this new life as a way to mask his own pain and, unconsciously, to regain the respect he felt he had lost. But the more he tried to be this perfect person, the further he distanced himself from his true self, leading him to a deep identity crisis.

Mariana, surprised, began to see the truth behind Gabriel’s façade. All the perfection she believed was a silent revenge against her was actually a reflection of his own internal struggle. He hadn’t been trying to get back at her; he was as lost as she was. Gabriel’s transformation wasn’t an act of superiority, but a silent cry for help.

In shock, Mariana realized that all of her paranoia and anguish had been based on a distorted perception. Both of them had emotionally destroyed themselves in different ways. The irony was cruel: while she thought Gabriel was thriving, he had been pretending just to avoid facing his own pain.

In that moment, both of them were vulnerable, exposed. The "worst ex of all time" wasn’t Gabriel, nor Mariana. It was both of them. They had lost themselves within their own expectations, egos, and insecurities.

The End... Or a Beginning?

Mariana and Gabriel said their goodbyes, aware that they would each go their separate ways, but marked by the emotional journey they had shared. Now, they understood that the perfection they had sought was an illusion, and the real battle had always been internal.
