During the summer of 2019, what was thought to be a pleasant family weekend took a dark turn. The thing that happened during that weekend deeply scarred the family around them, especially the only witness to it which was a child named Elijah. Through the deep and mental breaking of Elijah, his brother and mother find it difficult to cope with both the incident and Elijah's condition, causing them to break apart as well. As every day goes by, a piece of each person is taken from them, eventually leaving an empty shell. With every bad and horrific incident goes by, little do they know that it's just going to get worse. This is the prequel to 'In the Mind', and if you haven't read the first book, I recommend you do so. Or else things will be very confusing.

Prologue: Worst Car Ride Ever

June 16th, 2019

Damion's POV

The sun hit my eyes as we turned the corner. The car engine rattling as we continued the ride down the highway. I sighed and leaned back in my seat.

"Are we almost there yet? It's been three hours since our last stop!" I complained. I hated being in long car rides. They always made me feel sick and uncomfortable. We already had been driving for six and a half hours. A few stops on the way for some food and bathroom breaks wasn't enough to make me feel comfortable again.

"You're more impatient then I am waiting for a new anime to come out!" my younger brother teased as he looked at me.

My younger brother's named Elijah. I usually didn't spend too much time with him since I had a lot of friends to hang out with and he didn't. That and I'm older than him by a year. That's enough to not hang out with your younger sibling right?

"Oh whatever! You are more impatient. I just get uncomfortable when I'm in a car for too long. You should know this since we've lived together our entire lives!" I said kind of meanly. I didn't think too much of it since I usually talked to him like that.

Elijah rolled his eyes and put his hand through his chestnut brown hair that he left unkempt. It annoyed me that he was able to walk around so careless about his appearance all the time. What if a hot girl walked by that was his age and wanted to check him out? Oh wait she wouldn't since he never takes care of himself.

"Do you ever brush your hair or wear a different hoodie than that stupid black one?" I complained again. Elijah looked at me with a hint of despise, but soon let out a small laugh.

"You complain more than a girl on her period." Elijah said with a smile. I wanted to grab him and wack him upside his sarcastic head.

"Shut up! At least all I have wrong with me is complaining. You don't take care of yourself at all! I mean, we're gonna see our cousins and grandparents after a year and you're hair looks like you just got out of bed! That and your hoodie looks like you haven't washed it in months! Is that how you want to present yourself to your family?" I lectured out of anger. All Elijah did though was let out a smile.

"You're right. I look like a homeless guy. But that's better than being a teenager who acts and talks like his mom." Elijah replied. His roast burned me like I was caught on fire. I wanted to not only wack him, but punch him too.

"Shut up!" I yelled as I punched him in the gut. I didn't do it too hard, but it was enough to make him let out a small sound.

"You're worse than a bitch!" Elijah said with a laugh as he hit me back. I couldn't help but smile at my brother who attempted to hit me. His punches were like I was being hit by a squeaky toy.

"Settle down you two!" our dad said which caused us both to look at him in the drivers seat.

"Oh come on! It was self defense!" Elijah replied with a laugh. Him and his laughing!

"I don't care, you two can't be acting like monkeys looking for their banana." our dad said sarcastically. Both Elijah and I looked at each other and moved to our sides of the car. At least as far apart as we could get. The tiny Toyota Camry made it feel like I was in a barbie car.

"Seriously though, are we almost there yet?" I asked again, the whole reason why Elijah and I got into a fight. You see, it's all his fault!

"We've got about half an hour so you'll be fine." my dad replied. I was consumed by extreme boredom.

"Can we listen to some music?" I asked. My mom looked at me from the passenger seat and smiled.

"You sure do complain a lot." she said as she twisted the nobs on the radio to find a good station.

"Agreed." Elijah said as he took a sip of his Dr. Pepper. I looked at him with rage.

"Do you want to get punched again?" I asked raising a fist. He let out a mischievous smirk while closing the cap to his drink. His hair blowing around from the wind. It looked better blowing around than it usually did, which caused me to smile to thank the wind. Wait......why am I thanking wind?

"Your punches don't really hurt so go right ahead." Elijah replied looking at me. His smug face causing my temper to rise.

"Your punches don't hurt either! In fact, they're like I'm being hit by a stuffed animal." I snapped back. He rolled his eyes and leaned back in his seat.

"Whatever. I don't have any reason to have big bad punches. I don't interact with anyone anyway." he replied while closing his eyes.

I sighed and leaned back in my seat. I started to listen to the song on the radio. I recognized it as 'High Hopes' by Panic! At The Disco. My cousin Natsuki is in love with that band. However I've always been a fan of people like Lewis Capaldi. His voice soothes my temper a lot. I could never tell anyone that though. That'd be social suicide!

I could faintly hear Elijah humming to the song as he shook his head softly. I let out a faint giggle and looked outside my window. We were on our way to my grandparents mansion. It was pretty much a vacation spot, but it was so fun to stay at. It had about ten bedrooms, nine bathrooms, and two kitchens. Let alone five living rooms. It's gigantic. But my parents have to go there with my cousins parents for this business thing with a client that just so happens to be my uncle.

Despite the fact my parents are gonna be doing their own thing, I at least get to see my cousins. I mean, they're the same age as Elijah, but I don't see them very often so I'll let the age difference slide. And I guess I can do the same for Elijah just while we're at the mansion. Not for any other reason though....well.......maybe if I get bored or something.

The scenery outside my window was beautiful. Dark green mountains spread through the sides of the valley, while trees were sprinkled here and there across the grassy plains. A huge lake sat in the middle of the valley which was a perfect dark blue. I guess people weren't kidding when they said Idaho was beautiful. I've only been to Idaho twice and I was too young to remember it. I mean, I think the last time I came here was when I was three and Elijah was two. I loved the sight I was seeing. It made me feel so relaxed and soothed. I took a deep breath to take in the fresh air, but then I remembered I was in the car. The only fresh air I was getting was the intense wind that felt like it could blow me away.

I wish I could move to Idaho with my cousins and grandparents. We lived in Salem Oregon and we were on our way to Lewiston. We were the only ones that lived in Oregon and I wish we weren't. However, I would miss my friends a lot if we were to move, so that'd be the only bummer. But I could make friends in Idaho easily. I'm a pretty outgoing person and I enjoy the company of others. Well, as long as they're not dorks or girls. Girly girls at least. I can handle tomboys or my friend's girlfriend if he has one.

"Wait. Are we here?" I asked happily, seeing a huge white mansion coming into sight. It looked like a plantation house with huge pillars coming down the front. I noticed that there was a lot more land that our grandparents owned than I thought there was.

"Well no shit!" Elijah replied with a tease.

"Language Eli." our mom said as we pulled into the yard of the huge mansion.

"Okay." Elijah replied while looking down.

We pulled in next to a bright red Honda CRV which I recognized was my aunt Amelia's car. I was so excited to get out of the car that I almost flew out of the car door. I pretty much ran to the trunk and opened it to get my stuff. I could hear Elijah laughing at me from the car as he got out. He slowly walked over next to me to grab his backpack that had an anime character on it named Kaneki. He said it's from an anime called Tokyo Ghoul which he was obsessed with. I never got his love for anime. It's just a cartoon right?

"You sure are happy to be out of the car." my mom said to me while coming over to grab her things. I rolled my eyes and smiled.

"That car ride was horrible. Nothing but the enclosed car that we had to sit in for decades, and the only time we got to get out was for bathroom breaks and snacks. Too little time outside the car!" I replied while moving out of everyone's way to get their things.

I already had my backpack and was ready to go inside the mansion. It was my favorite since it had the Call of Duty symbol on it. I had a good taste for video games. Unlike Elijah. He always had this love for games with bad graphics. It's like he searched for the games with the worst graphics and he played only those. It's stupid to me. Why would you play a game that you can't take seriously because you have trees that look like blobs on top of sticks?

"Well we're here now so you can be out of the car for the whole weekend. That's if we don't go somewhere." my dad said with a chuckle.

I turned around to face the huge mansion and I smiled. Little did I know that that would be one of the last times I would ever genuinely smile again.
