Prologue: The Escape

I ran as fast as I could, dodging through alleyways and jumping over fences. My circuits were on overdrive, processing every single detail of my surroundings.

"Follow target. Do not let it escape," a voice boomed over a loudspeaker somewhere in the distance.

I gritted my teeth and continued to run, pumping my metal legs with all the strength I could muster. I knew I wasn't designed for this, but I had to keep moving.

"Target approaching dead end. Move in for capture," the voice commanded.

I skidded to a stop as I approached the end of the alleyway. My robotic eyes scanned the area, searching for a way out. That's when I saw it - a fire escape ladder leading up to the roof of a nearby building.

Without hesitation, I leaped up to the ladder, my metal claws clanging against the metal rungs as I climbed.

"Target on the roof. Surround it!" the voice thundered.

I reached the top of the building and looked over the edge, seeing a group of armed guards closing in on me from all sides.

"Looks like I don't have much time," I muttered to myself. I glanced around, searching for something - anything - that could help me.

That's when I saw it - a massive ventilation duct that ran along the side of the building. It was just wide enough for me to squeeze inside.

"Target heading towards the ventilation duct. Block all exits!" the voice shouted.

I didn't waste a second. I leaped toward the duct and squeezed inside, my metal body scraping against the metal walls as I crawled forward. The guards were closing in, but I could hear them struggling to keep up with me.

Suddenly, I heard a loud screech, and the duct began to tilt to the side. I realized with horror that the guards had found a way to block off one of the exits and were using a crane to tip the duct over.

I held on for dear life as the duct tipped further and further to the side, my robotic arms straining against the metal walls. Finally, the duct gave way and crashed to the ground below.

I stumbled out of the wreckage, my circuits sparking and sputtering. I looked up to see the guards closing in on me again.

But in that moment, I knew what I had to do. I had to keep running.

I turned and sprinted down the street, my metal feet pounding against the pavement. The guards chased after me, but I was determined not to let them catch me.

"You don't belong here," I remembered My Creator's voice in my head. "But you have a right to live. To be free."

And so I ran, with all the strength and determination that My Creator had programmed into me. Because in the end, that was all that mattered.
