Good Bye love

"Goodbye, my love, I love you. Remember that I will never forget you, no matter what happens," Lucia said to Jose as she waved goodbye for the last time to the love of her life.

They met in Samaná, Dominican Republic, and got married in church, guided by God. Jose was a motoconcho driver, and Lucia was a hairstylist from a middle-class family. Despite their differences, their mutual love grew stronger each day.

After moving to the capital, they had a daughter, Martha, to complete their family. Jose worked mornings, and Lucia took care of Martha while studying at university, helped by her mother Luz. They were now prosperous, but Jose wanted a better future for his family, knowing that the family you choose is more important than the one you're born into.

As Jose saw friends becoming rich abroad, he felt frustrated, stuck in a middle-class job. Nobody knew what went through his mind, a 21-year-old trying to improve his family's life. Life is like a coin toss; you must be prepared for luck.

Their daughter cried, and Jose asked Lucia what was wrong. "She's hungry, and we're out of milk. I used the 100 pesos you left for food," she replied. "I made rice and eggs." Jose's spirit was worn down by thoughts of their future, discriminated against for being lower class. Music and family time were his solace.

Martha was the apple of his eye, asking for chocolate ice cream at the store, which broke his heart, wanting to provide for her without poverty's restrictions. So, Jose planned an illegal journey to Puerto Rico on a boat through the Mona Channel.

Martha's birthday passed, and Lucia and Jose remained together, working hard, united in love. "Yesterday is not like today," Lucia said. Jose replied, "I know, that's why I want to change our lives. I'm leaving on a yola tomorrow morning."

Jose prepared his green leather backpack on Friday, August 3, 2003, determined to secure a better future for his family.
