This story is a sample from my ebook collection of short stories, The Sweetest Orange.
He’d trade his kingdom for a mother.
The words, “I love you.” Echoing in his imagination.
A crown of glass upon his head. Gerald was the King of Starlight, but never loved.
His parents wanted power, but it was out of grasp.
When Gerald received his grandfather’s crown, they hated him more.
But the kingdom grew and thrived with King Gerald.
He visited the masses, including the home of the elderly.
Aromas of pine and lemon oil filled every room but the kitchen.
All the chairs were arranged in a massive line. The visitors held the hands of their older loved ones.
Only one was forgotten, slumped in her warn chair.
She lacked a visitor, and Gerald walked to her. “Are you okay?” he asked.
“My son is here.” Bertha reached out and grabbed his fingers, pretending her son was visiting.
The king played the son for the first time.
“Your Highness, she never had a child,” the nurse whispered to the king. “But Bertha is lonely.”
“My son is visiting.” Bertha smiled and sat up. Her eyes were partially blind by age. “I love you,” she said to King Gerald.
“And I love you too, Mother,” and the words were no longer a lie.
