Sleepless Night

Ameliawas sitting on the bench, and next to her was Edward. She was holding his arm, like you would hold a child's hand. She was looking at the rest of the kids playing around. They were her age, but nobody played with her. Why? Because Edward was there, and in many activities Edward wasn't included. Kids grow up fast, especially in mind. The want to run before they can learn how to walk. They want to be adults, not knowing that's a whole new world. That didn't include Amelia, as a matter of fact, she'd rather stay a child all her life if she could. And that opinion will probably never change.

This particular day wasn't a beautiful one. Neither in weather nor emotionally or in company as a matter of fact. Orphamages like hers had one thing in common. There were favourites and ones like Amelia, not so favoured. And this particular day showed it.

-Look who is here. - In an instant, a group of boys was standing in front of him, and they weren't very friendly ones. - Tiny little childish Amelia.

-Can't you leave me alone?

-Or what? Are you going to rat us out to your bear? What was his name again? Edmund? Edgar?

-Edward. - stated Amelia now standing up.

-Oh? Trying to be brave? - asked the boy with a wicked grin.

-I'm not trying to be brave. I AM brave.

-Let's test it out! - the next moment the boy snatched Edward from Amelia's grip and lifted it high so she wouldn't be able to reach it.

-Give it back frog face! - said Amelia at the edge of tears.

-Are you going to cry like a little baby?

What the boy didn't know, is that Amelia wasn't a girl who can be bullied easily, at all. She used to be tough in the past, and seeing Edward out of reach spar,ed something in her. A spark that became a flame and the next moment, the boy was kneeling on the ground. Amelia hit bullseye. Straight in the middle. The boy was forced to drop Edward, and just before Edward reached the soil, Amelia caught her. She wanted to slap the unknown boy once more, but ner hand was grabbed from behind.

-Stop that you cursed child! -it was the nurse, she was also the biggest witch in the orphanage. Amelia knew that it was pointless trying to explain herself to her. She already made up her mind, and Amelia was waiting to see if she was off the hook this time. Or maybe trying to guess what the punishment would be. Which was more expected than just a "go away".

-Are you alright David? - asked the nurse from the kneelimg boy. So that was his name. David. It was a familiar name, but she didn't know from where. To Amelia it was obvious that David was okay, but not even she expected what was about to happen. David suddenly bursted into tears, which were clearly fake. Unfortunately the nurse completely bought the act. Even Amelia had to admit that he was good at it. The nurse picked him up and took him inside. And before Amelia knew it, she was already receiving her humiliating punishment. During dinner, everyone gathered together to eat at the never ending tables. The food was terrible as usual, but Amelia didn't get to taste it this time. She was standing in the middle of the hall on a chair, while Edward was between her arms. It was embarrassing. She stood there watching everyone laughing at her. All she wanted to do was run away and never come back. Unfortunately that would probably earn her another day of humiliation, and that, she wanted to avoid. Deep in her mind, all she was doing is imagining herself with her parents. Dinner was over in two hours, and Amelia was let go, but hungrily. She made her way to her bed, hoping to finish the day as early as possible. And of course, that didn't happen.

Amelia was laying in bed, while a storm raged outside trying to fall asleep, but to no avail. She was afraid of lightning and thunder. VERY AFRAID. And the fact that both of them are just outside her window, didn’t help her sleep at all. She remembered what her sweet mother used to say.

“Always think of something really nice when you are afraid, Amelia”.

And then his Dad would say:

“Think of me and Mum. And how much we love you”

And every time in the orphanage, Amelia was sad or afraid, she would think of her parents. Remembering different memories of them playing together. Her favourite was her birthday. Where they gifted her a very special Teddy Bear. Who she named Edward, after her father. And since then, Edward never left Amelia’s side. Not in the kitchen, not in the garden, not in the bathroom and certainly not in school. Whatever happened, Edward was always there. Taking the exact same steps. And this particular night, was no exception either. Amelia always thought that Edward was thinking the same way she was. Whenever Amelia was uncomfortable, she would comfort Edward. She didn't actually know if she was comforting herself or Edward. But either way, Amelia would feel much better, when his loyal friend was there. And this particular night, she decided to bury his face in Edward while hiding under the blanket.

-Mother nature had too much cocoa for sure. Why is it so hard to sleep?- she asks Edward, like every other time.

Amelia gets out of bed and decides to walk for a bit around the orpbanage, which of course she wasn't allowed to do. But she would always do so while she lived at home. She would crawl in bed with her parents until the storm was over. Or her mother would read her comforting stories. She was very loved at home. She missed her parents very much and she wondered what it meant when she was told: “You will see them soon after a very long time”. She always wondered, when is soon? Is it tomorrow or the day after? Next week or next month? Maybe a year? But that didn’t seem like soon. More like very later. And that made Amelia very sad, she promised whe wouldn't cry, but there's no helping it.

She grabbed Edward and said:

-I will go and see the nurse now. - She was sure that now was now, meaning this very same time. That she knew for sure.
