Well, I have finally been accepted into my dream college. I honestly thought I would be more excited for this, but I'm leaving behind the few friends I had. Although most people don't consider your own relatives your friends, I always did. I never wanted to confront the fact that I had very few social skills. As the bus pulled in, I hugged my mom and dad and said my goodbyes.
"but wait!" My little sister squealed while sprinting towards me with a box.
"Take this, Betty!" My sister blurted out while outstrechting her arms.
"What's in it?" I asked.
"It's a surprise," she tittered.
I set the box down temporarily and gave her a farewell hug. I then added it to my luggage and hopped on the bus.
As I was awaiting my destination, I heard what sounded like a small snicker. I shrugged it off, thinking it was just another passenger, but then I heard it again. It was coming from the box my sister gave me! Out of curiosity, I made the decision to open it prematurely. I find that the gift my sister has given me is a garden gnome that is about 18 inches from shoe to tip of cap. As I looked at the gnome, there was one feeling I couldn't shake: the feeling that this little ornament was gazing back at me. "The gnome must have had a hidden speaker that was malfunctioning." Thinking this through, I placed the gnome back in the box to deal with it later.
As I finally reached the college, I felt a wave of nervousness build up. When I reached the door, I thought, "How hard can it be to make new friends or maybe get a boyfriend?" I had always wanted to be in a relationship, but my inability to start a basic conversation with anybody I didn't know previously has made that very difficult. Taking a deep breath, I pushed open the door. After entering the building, I took a gander around the room. I was so distracted that I didn't notice the elderly woman approaching me.
"Hello, do you want me to give you a tour of the campus?" My body jolted in surprise.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you."
I skittishly replied, "Yes, thank you; I would like to see the grounds."
"Alright, the first room we will visit will be the library. After marching through the hall for 10 minutes, we finally made it to the
"Take a look around, and make sure to check out any books you like."
"But, I just got here. I don't have a university library card.
"Our library program is a partnership between our university and the state library. If you have a state library card, you can check out books here. Just don't make it take too long, because we still have the rest of the college to see."
After shuffling around the library for a while, I finally decided on three books: one on mythological creatures, one on criptids, and one cheesy romance novel. Checking out those books I pondered. "Maybe my lifelong obsession with the supernatural and mythological creatures is why my sister got me the gnome." Afterwards, I placed the book on the package in my backpack and zipped it shut. Placing my carry-on back on, I resumed following the woman.
