What is Business and Publishing? Why is this important? - Article

Business by definition is an organisation or enterprising entity engaged in commercial, industrial, or professional activities. Businesses can be for-profit entities or non-profit organisations. Business types range from limited liability companies, sole proprietorships, corporations, and partnerships.

Publishing by definition is the occupation or activity of preparing and issuing books, journals, and other material for sale. As such you're creating a product for consumers. Whereas in marketing, a product is an object, or system, or service made available for consumer use as of the consumer demand; it is anything that can be offered to a market to satisfy the desire or need of a customer. And identifying the need of a consumer is important.

The thing about publishing is that everyone needs to be aware that just because you publish something doesn't mean you're going to make money immediately. What do I mean by this? Publishing is something that everyone is capable of doing with a computer and connection to the internet: the types of materials that can be published varies. You can publish a book, a comic, a podcast, a blog, a piece of music, a video etc.

Some people are able to make money quickly but normally it's done when people closest to the creator contributes to their works because they know them. When it comes to a larger audience, not everyone will know you so it's important to build trust with your audience by allowing them to get to know you. In this way, you can then secure payments and with payments comes income. However, just because you secure the payments doesn't mean that your customers will return. Ensuring your content and your information that you've decided to create makes an impact that can and will generate returning and consistent revenue.
However, publishing especially ebooks has become oversaturated meaning that there is more supply rather than demand. This means that there are less likely going to be people that will purchase a book because of the numerous amount of books released each year. This is the same with videos, music, podcast etc. I'm not saying that no one will see your content but I am saying that there is so much content available that you'll be expected to compete with thousands of other creators in order to make your self well known among your audience and effectively build a community.

Difference Between An Aggregator and Self-publishing Websites

What is the difference?

An aggregator in business is also known as a networking e-commerce business model, which collects data pertaining to goods offered by other competing websites or online business and displays it on it's own website or software. Whereas, a publishing aggregator is a service that lets you upload your manuscript in one place, and then distributes your work to multiple channels—the retailers who sell you work, such as Apple iBooks, Kobo, Amazon, and more. Naturally, your book is subjected to their terms and service.

Whereas, self-publishing refers to an author or writer completing the entire publishing process on their own or with their own resources. This is done without the help of a traditional publisher or publishing company but sometimes not without the help of a self-publishing service company. A lot of the time self-publishers will request for self-publishing services such as professional editing and cover design in order to compete with traditionally published books.

Self-publishing service companies provide:
  • Education: such as self-publishing programs which will teach you how to self-publish on your own allowing you to obtain and keep the majority of royalties.
  • Done-For-You: these are self-publishing service companies that offer author services from graphic design through to publishing. Some are vanity press publishers which should be avoided.
  • Platform: A self-publishing platform is a company that allows you to upload your actual book for distribution.
  • Editing & Design: This type of service is known as author services in the self-publishing industry. It includes services such as manuscript editing, cover design, book illustration, and formatting. Every self-published author needs professional author services to publish a quality book, so investing in this type of company is a must-have.
  • Platform & Printing: This service is from companies that serve as a platform for eBook distribution, but also have book printing services. For example, Amazon’s KDP would fall under this category because it allows authors to distribute their eBook on the platform, and prints and fulfills physical book orders.
  • Marketing & Promotion: Self-publishing companies that are mainly book promotion sites will fall under this category.
  • Tools: Some of the tools listed in this category are strictly designed for self-publishing, but we also include other general tools that authors may find useful.
In Conclusion,

Whether you decide to self-publish and do everything yourself or use an aggregator the choice is yours. It's best to do a lot of research before deciding which company to use. You normally can tell the genuine companies from those that are genuine by asking a lot of questions and becoming informed.

Self-publishing Tips and Need-to-Knows

Self-publishing is as the name states, is done by a person who publishes a book by themselves. Whether it be through an aggregator or a self-publishing site like IngramSpark or Draft2Digital. They are able to publish your book easily and for free but your book will be subjected to their terms of service.

To self-publish successfully is to produce content on a regular and recurring basis. Several times a year at least. Publishing one book will limit your reach and potential buyers. Ultimately, as a self-publisher your goal is to reach as much readers as possible that way you can maximize your earnings and fanbase.

Successful monetization of your content is key. However, because of the amount of books self-published each year, you're competing in an over saturated and readily-accessible market. Especially, depending on you're chosen genre and the trends at the time. Just because you're publishing a book in particular doesn't necessarily mean you'll make money. After all, self-publishing a book is releasing it to the public like any other product released by a company for consumer consumption. A demand for it is a must.
