Be careful with technicalities

The dictionary defines technicalities as "Each of the technical voices used in the language of an art, a science, a trade, among others.". Understanding this, as the complex language that is used within a particular speciality.

The question is: Can a writer make use of technicalities in his/her writings?

Although, dictionaries state that they are technical voices used in an art (...), and writing is an art, it is not recommended to use them excessively, since, they can create a distance between the writer and reader. When a person reads a novel, he/she seeks to identify with the story in a profound way, through desires and needs, and if this is written in a language that escapes their field of knowledge, the reader simply leaves it.

Imagine that in a suspense story, the author writes a conversation, using legal technicalities, for example:

"He laughed with relief at what he had just witnessed. I take a deep breath and turn the body in the direction of his friend to comment on what happened: ―It is believed that the wife of the deceased will file a claim for damages against Mario's family, and if possible, also accuse them of injury, What?

"What a problem for Mario." You and I know that he had nothing to do with the murder of that poor man. ”He paused for a long time, as if he was pondering what he would say. My wife told me that in the halls of the Palace of Justice it is rumored that Mario will be charged with the intellectual author of the murder, so he will be given several years in prison."

See, that for a lawyer this conversation is extremely clear, however for an accountant, architect or for a high school student, the situation is different. The author must avoid unnecessary technicalities, in order to get into the reader's thinking. Recalling that simplicity in his writing is a sign of previous quality work and not carelessness and even bad writing.

Search to connect with the reader and you will see great results.

Choose the correct type of narrator for your story

The narrator is the most important character in any narrative, on which the characters of the story depend. Although the narrator does not necessarily need to have a human identity, his behavior, type of language and dramatic reach constitute an elementary point to obtain the credibility of the work. Deciding who will be the narrator or the voice of the narrative text, after defining the argument, is one of the first steps for the construction of a story in which a well-stitched and coherent story is told. In short, the narrator is the voice that tells the reader what happens in the story. Presents the characters and places the action or sequence of events in a space and at a specific time.

It may seem that there are thousands of options when choosing who will tell our story but the truth is that there are only 3, which are: The character narrator (1st person POV (Point of View), the ambiguous narrator (2nd person POV) and the omniscient narrator (3rd person POV).

1.- The character narrator: It's the one that narrates from the first grammatical person. He is a narrator whose possibilities are focused on the reach of the senses that any ordinary human being possesses. This means that you have limited knowledge of what happened, happens and will occur in the story. However, this limitation is never seen as a defect, on the contrary, it is part of its charm and credibility when narrating.

His highly emotional tone is the result of a particular psychological complexity that is the model of the face of any character. When this type of narrator is chosen, readers are given the feeling that they are dealing with a being of flesh and blood, with doubts, conflicts and decisions that may be a reflection of ours (as writers) or of the reader itself.

This type of voice creates a warm closeness to the facts, through which you can come to understand our own essence and quite possibly that of others. Telling a story from this narrator is to tell it from the "I" giving the feeling that you are telling a story that may or may not be of yourself and consequently that feeling will be reflected directly in the reader. The character narrator has all the limitations that people have, they can not know what other people think or feel (unless they tell them), they can not exhaustively know the past, the present or the future because their faculties they prevent, however, their truth is more credible and closer by the simple fact that their experiences are connected with events in a realistic and sensitive way.

2 .- The ambiguous narrator: This narrator is a kind of voice of conscience, arguably a voice hidden behind a second grammatical person who uses "you" as a kind of mental resonance in the psyche of a character. Its scope is not necessarily limited to the individual but it does not reach the broad spectrum of omniscience either.

It is typical of the characters who talk to themselves as if they were addressing someone else. Their special tone is usually used with protagónicos that suffer from some disorder or are strongly focused on their own emotions and knowledge. These narrators are usually very valuable in plots where one or more characters are persecuted or obsessed by some obsession. Although this narrator is not one of the most used, his well-used force can yield the best results according to the plot we set out to develop.

3.- The omniscient narrator: It is a voice that relates from the third person, which occupies an independent space and does not necessarily have emotional links with the story that narrates. You can explore the past, present and future thanks to its long reach, which gives it the power to penetrate the consciences of them and unravel the thoughts of each one.

Although this narrator knows everything, has the disadvantage of a certain coldness and perspective outside when telling a story. In short, telling a story in the third person, is telling the story of someone else giving the reader the feeling of seeing the facts instead of living them, that is, you can tell the difference between seeing and feeling. Because it is one thing to feel that you who happen to you, be it with joy, sadness, etc. and another thing is to see what feels or happens to a certain character. That is why the reader may be predisposed to the fact that the writing may be manipulated by the narrator and that perhaps the narrative suffers from a certain artificiality.

Master this type of voice will have the great advantage of exploring situations and experiences that an ordinary person could not given their human limitations.

Once focused on our argument, the design of the story itself will suggest the type of narrator that is most convenient to communicate the facts that we have proposed to reach readers through the written word. It will depend on the story, its point of view and the spaces in which the plot takes place, which narrator will be chosen to show the speech as a spontaneous and natural event in tune with the interactions of the characters and the world itself that all Well-crafted fiction recreates itself.

The keys to promote your book

Photo: Internet

A writer's life is not easy. It's all about writing, erasing, rewriting, spending hours waiting for something to emerge from your imagination, sometimes it stays blank and sometimes it just flows like river water. And the difficult thing continues, it is time to publish and make people read your work. Publishing houses become an option, but you do not always have the money and the necessary resources. The positive thing is that unlike several years ago, we can now use the internet to promote our books.

However, the Internet it's so big that you also have to know how to use it. Here we leave you some points to keep in mind.

According to an article by Excentrya, the first thing you should do as a writer is to create your personal blog. Many authors prefer to have a blog after publishing their book, but creating it from the beginning and telling the whole process of creating your books, can be very interesting for readers. In this way, people will know your name. The closer you get to the readers, the more they will want to have you nearby.

The second, use your social networks to promote yourself. These days, Social Networks are everything. This is why most businesses use them and they even have one or two people in charge of it. They have a great influence in sales and people's mind. But first, you should know how to use them. Promote your stories, but don't create spam. Do continuous post to keep people updated, but do not overwhelm them with so much information. Invite them to your blog and above all (and very IMPORTANT) interact with them. It seems not, but users and people in general appreciate the proximity.

Third, worry about the quality of your book. If you want to be known as a good writer you must do what great writers do: write impeccably. It is not necessary that you know 100% your style (because that is found along the way); but you should have as a priority the spelling, grammar and general structure of your work. Many independent books fail for this reason. It is thought that by publishing for free, anyone can publish anything and if you want to be a writer it is essential to have a work with zero grammatical or orthographic errors. If this is still your weakness, do not worry, you can hire a correction service or pay someone to make a report. There are always ways to improve.

Fourth, tell the story of how you created your book in an emotional way. Connect with your readers telling them why did you write that book and what is your mission with it. In what way can you help others.

Fifth, create a media strategy for your book, including a kit with: your biography as a writer, press releases, personal information, information on upcoming events, important events, a synopsis of a book and a personal photo. In addition, you can create a short slogan that summarizes the most important of your book, which arouses the curiosity of readers.

Sixth, look for reviews. It is said that between 5 to 7 months before publishing your book or finishing it, look for people interested in reviewing it. The reviews support you to give you details that you could improve for your publication.

And as a seventh point, be creative with the other resources. Expand your promotion channels. For example: Create videos, both on YouTube and Facebook, attend conferences and / or writing events and make contacts, talk with new people, present your books, account what you are creating, etc.

Sometimes the word promote us we do not like, but in any career or specialty is necessary to transcend. Value your work, expose it and others will value it. Try different ways to make yourself known, you do not have to stay with one forever. And if at first you do not see results, it persists. This is not a race of speed, but rather of resistance. He who stays focused, triumphs.

What you should know when writing Romance

Your Romantic Story is in its climax, your characters are waiting for the real action to begin, but none of that will happen until you write what will happen to them.

The current romantic novels do not have a unique meaning. Each love story can have totally different plots that emerge from the author's own imagination. The "how" and the "why" only make you wonder what will happen to them. But, what are the things you should keep in mind when writing Romance?

1- Inspire yourself: Reading other stories is always helpful, but be careful: they will only give you an idea of how to write it and it's you who should create it.

2- They are mine! : The protagonists are important and more than anything in a love story. Their strengths and weaknesses will enrich your story, stick to them and let yourself go. And never forget how they feel!

3- They say it but ...: Pay attention to the dialogues, they have a very important role around the whole story, they are what define -sometimes- their voices. Accept that every now and then they have a bad day and they can escape something!

4- Your ideas, your world: Imagine an interesting conflict and from there create the love story. Some of your characters may have had a story with an ex, allow yourself to develop it, and be free to break hearts!

5- Do not forget the focus: If the main plot is about a couple do not delve into stories of other couples that appear with the plot, since some readers will not be interested. Dedicate exclusively to one, capable in the future the others may have their own history.

6- Stop the fire! : If your desire is to write erotic scenes, do it. It transmits physical attraction, its own desires and its deepest thoughts. Free yourself from sexual tension and ... Ca-Boom? Just be sure to specify that your story is of erotic romance and that it is not suitable for minors.

7- Accept the end: Romance stories do not always have happy endings. If you decide to create a shocking ending, be careful not to overtake it in the plot.

8- Imagine t-o-d-o: If you are one of those who dream with romance or believe in love at first sight, write it and enjoy it.
