Who is hank?

Hank moody starring David Duchovny, is a fictional character and the protagonist of the Showtime television series Californication. He is a writer known as "famous of a novel" who lives situations like a lover of women, a fan of rock and roll, and a great whiskey drinker. The drink, women and much of their immature actions end badly in most cases. Drugs are also a subject that is quite explicit, although the real problem is alcohol, after hank is punished for the suicide of his ex-girlfriend. The series shows us how this is aimed at rehabilitation, after agreeing to have a problem. His bad deeds like becoming totally detestable, and perhaps a suicide attempt, are what worry his daughter Rebecca Moody (Becca), and the mother of his daughter Karen (Karen van der Beek).

Beyond suffering an attraction of women to him, above all these, and in a large number, Hank does not stop loving and trying to be with Karen. But, although the two try to try, the two know that at any time shit.

On all his erroneous attempts, Hank shows us that he will always love Karen, whether they are together or not. Beyond everything he does wrong, he will not get tired of trying again and trying to reform the family. Even so, probably being a regular father, he loves his daughter more than anything else in the world, and tries to help whenever he can, even if his daughter is more mature and always defends him in all his shits.

As a lover of words, a good romantic man who knows how to understand and listen to a woman, Hank leaves us a message at the end of each chapter. And this is important, since we have to take into account the life of this womanizer writer and drinker who, at the end of the day, the most important thing for him are his two women. His family.

Remember that: “And the end of the day it’s all about her”.

After Hank publishes his novel God Hates Us All, it adapts to a Hollywood movie, which he obviously hates. He suffers from the well-known "writer's block" stopping his literary production while being dragged by the distractions caused by Hollywood life, and with the help of being a famous author of renown. This leads to Hank to a routine of alcohol, drugs and promiscuity. The seven seasons of the series pass between unsuccessful attempts to recover the love of Karen and Becca. All this alternates with banal everyday situations mixed with alcohol, drugs and sex within the artistic world of cinema and music.

«“Good morning, Hell-A. In the land of the lotus-eaters, time plays tricks on you. One day you’re dreaming, the next, your dream has become your reality. It was the best of times. If only someone had told me. Mistakes were made, hearts were broken, harsh lessons learned. My family goes on without me, while I drown in a sea of pointless pussy. I don’t know how I got here. But here I am, rotting away in the warm California sun. There are things I need to figure out, for her sake, at least. The clock is ticking. The gap is widening. She won’t always love me “no matter what”».

Some of Hank Moody's publications:

· God Hates Us All
· Fucking and Punching — Real experience of Hank with Mia Lewis. Simple as before hank ends, my punch hits her.
· Lew Ashby, a biography — Hank writes about the story of the fictional character Lew Ashby in the recording industry. He publishes it after Lew dies from an overdose of heroin.
· Californication

Writing is a shit with Hank Moody:

“People seem to be getting dumber and dumber. You know, I mean we have all this amazing technology and yet computers have turned into basically four figure wank machines. The internet was supposed to set us free, democratize us, but all it's really given us is Howard Dean's aborted candidacy and 24 hour a day access to kiddie porn. People... they don't write anymore, they blog. Instead of talking, they text, no punctuation, no grammar: LOL this and LMFAO that. You know, it just seems to me it's just a bunch of stupid people pseudo-communicating with a bunch of other stupid people at a proto-language that resembles more what cavemen used to speak than the King's English.”

"Hank, when was the last time you wrote something? His life is a mess so he can’t write."

But this is not true. All of us who have seen californication know that Hank is not the image of a good writer, we know that he is not the best stereotype of how to be a successful writer, and what he really shows us is an alcoholic depressant. But at least for me, I do not keep that, yes, it is not the best example for someone who wants to be a writer; Now, ¿Can you become a famous writer? ¿And how should one be? ¿Does Hank show the opposite of being so? ¿Or does it show us a perspective on how a minority of writers are?

The californication series wants to show beyond Hank Moody as a writer wants to show his shit, his passion for women and his relationship with drinking. And as despite his crap he does not stop trying with the most important women in his life.

And the message he leaves as a writer is not that he is a loser who does not write any day, but sincerely tells you not to be a writer. If it's not what you really want to be, do not be.

He says something like this:

Writing is a shit

Be a writer is a shit. It's like have homework for life. If you really want to be, if the word really comes from you, if you really feel passion for it and want to share it with the world, then you should be.

But if this does not come from you and you do not see the way to write that way, don’t do it.

Writing is complicated… so, don’t do it. The art of write is more than wrote some words in the last night when you were sad and alone. Is more than this. Remember that, do something else.

“I can’t teach you how to write, and anybody who says they can is full of shit.”

Hank Moody and Charles Bukowski:

Obviously the character is based on Henry Chinaski, alter ego by Charles Bukowski, in some of the novels where he is represented as an antihero, alcoholic, womanizer and wandering from job to job. Exactly the same role and the same characteristics that Hank fulfills, wrong again and again, knowing different women through time and through changing his work to shit everywhere.

In addition to the fact that the two are very similar in terms of the person, they have a similar opinion in terms of being a writer and what it is to be one.

So you want to be a writer by Bukowski:

if it doesn’t come bursting out of you

in spite of everything,

don’t do it.

unless it comes unasked out of your

heart and your mind and your mouth

and your gut,

don’t do it.

if you have to sit for hours

staring at your computer screen

or hunched over your

searching for words,

don’t do it.

if you’re doing it for money or

don’t do it.

if you’re doing it because you want

women in your bed,

don’t do it.

if you have to sit there and

rewrite it again and again,

don’t do it.

if it’s hard work just thinking about doing it,

don’t do it.

if you’re trying to write like somebody

forget about it.

if you have to wait for it to roar out of

then wait patiently.

if it never does roar out of you,

do something else.

if you first have to read it to your wife

or your girlfriend or your boyfriend

or your parents or to anybody at all,

you’re not ready.

don’t be like so many writers,

don’t be like so many thousands of

people who call themselves writers,

don’t be dull and boring and

pretentious, don’t be consumed with self-

the libraries of the world have

yawned themselves to

over your kind.

don’t add to that.

don’t do it.

unless it comes out of

your soul like a rocket,

unless being still would

drive you to madness or

suicide or murder,

don’t do it.

unless the sun inside you is

burning your gut,

don’t do it.

when it is truly time,

and if you have been chosen,

it will do it by

itself and it will keep on doing it

until you die or it dies in you.

there is no other way.

and there never was.

  • Hank Moody writing.

And the finally of the book everyone celebrates:

Hank Moody is a man who shows a different way of living with other writers. Still, you have to go beyond your role and look at what the series really focuses on: Hank always got into trouble, with a different woman, bottle of whiskey and sometimes drugs; but after having passed over all that mountain of shit, he returns to his home, where his family is. In the 7 seasons of the series Hank is going to try it with Karen, always going to show that despite so many women she is the only one that really loves, along with the daughter they have together. A girl who goes through the typical problems of adolescence and needs the help of Hank at all times. Is he the best father in the world? No, it is not. But he tries to make do with it when something goes wrong and does everything possible to make it happen.

“In spite of his flaws, Hank is a good man. He loves his daughter, he loves the mother of his child, and he never once fails to put them before himself. Sure, he's also a man idiot, and drinks and smokes so much, but fuck it, we've all been around the block, and nobody is perfect. Hank cares about people. More than he cares about himself”.

Hank can be a nightmare many times, and a constant headache, which produces a change of work every month. Hank is a man who lives life, is based on experience and then through that he writes. His books have a mix of sex, women, society, life in California and obviously rock and roll. Every detail of Hank is what makes it unique, different. And it's not just his way of writing, when he does it. It is their way of dressing, their way of speaking, that "I've seen a lot of shit" character that I can take this, their way of chatting with a woman, and how to fix your crap all the time.

Whenever Hank ends a book everyone is happy: his family, his friends, and the people who like the way he writes. He is not the typical writer with the inspiration next to him, nor that of taking book after book, nor of having frequency to write. Although this character first lives out his different experiences, he does an investigation like Lew Ashby's life, and then, after a few chapters, he writes something. And it does not always go well, there are drafts that people do not like, or that are mysteriously stolen.

The truth is that, from time to time, Hank writes something. And always or almost always is a good thing. Whether it's a book, a song, a play, a television series or a movie. Always the character gives that magic in the lyrics that everyone likes. Maybe it will be because he does not write for anyone in particular. And most importantly, when he finishes writing, he has a small routine.

—Every time I finish a book— Whisky, Weed and Warren Zevon. It’s the little things.

I hope you liked it.
