It's sad when a love that seemed to last forever shatters like glass. I met Adriana and loved her as soon as I laid eyes on her. Life turned into a sea of passion during the short time we dated. I decided to take marry her, swearing eternal love.
Today I think that the right thing to do would have been to wait a little longer to take this step, however, when we are young and impulsive we believe that desire and passion are capable of overcoming everything. We just act according to social norms and driven by our hearts.
It's interesting how, during a relationship, we don’t notice our partner. I'm not going to generalize. Not at all. However, in my case, I was blind to the signs and what was beautiful gradually became obsessive. I noticed that Adriana started to feel irritated by my phone. At first I thought it was funny, after all, a little jealousy spices up any relationship, besides giving a certain security. The arguments ended up being resolved with a delicious night of love, and for me, everything was wonderful. I tried not to pay too much attention to the device, but sometimes it felt impossible.
One night when we were watching a movie, i noticed several calls. I left her watching TV and went to the kitchen. When I came back, her eyes were full of hate:
— Let me see your phone — she ordered, holding out her hand.
— It was work. What do you want to see? — I asked calmly.
She jumped off the couch and came towards me. She pushed me and, since I wasn't expecting that reaction, I fell down. She took advantage of the situation and sat on top of me, grabbing the phone. I was stunned by her reaction, because she ran and locked herself in the bathroom. I followed her, not because I had anything to hide, but because I was astonished by everything that had happened. Half and hour later, she opened up the door shaking the phone towards my face asking:
— Who is the bitch you were talking to? — Her eyes shone with rage.
— Who are you talking about? — I was already feeling irritated by her behavior.
— Who is the blonde? The so-called M. I. Fonseca? Is she your lover?
— What?
— Don't play dumb. You were talking to her. Is that what you do when I'm sleeping? — She hit my chest hard and then slapped my face.
Hatred took over me, as well as pain. I grabbed her by the arms and shook her hard, trying to talk some sense into her, telling her that the girl was a client of the office and that the conversation had not gone beyond the professional. She kicked me and then ran to the bedroom crying. That night I slept on the couch. I woke up with a bad taste in my mouth. I opened my eyes and saw her standing, looking at me satisfied.
— That idiot will never talk to you again. — A chill ran down my spine.
— What did you do? — I asked observing the cynical smile on her face.
I ran to the bathroom, getting ready to start the day. I left the house without having breakfast. When I arrived at the office, my boss was waiting for me with a serious expression.
— What were you thinking when you decided to disrespect Maria Inês? Expect a lawsuit for that.
I told Caio what happened. He shook his head and said he would intervene on my behalf, but that I had to take care of her. I felt devastated and the day was a mess. I went home and she was waiting for me with the dinner table ready and set. She treated me kindly, as if nothing had happened. I told her I wasn't hungry and then she started picking up the plates and throwing them at me.
— Were you with that bitch? Is that why you don't want to eat my food?
— Are you crazy, Adriana? Why are you doing this to us? I've loved you since the first time I saw you and I've never looked at another woman. What's happening to you? — I shouted, almost crying.
— I can't stand the idea of staying home while you go out and be around other women.
— You're the one who didn't want to go back to work after the wedding. — he said, running his hand through his hair.
— I knew it. You want to get rid of me, don't you? With me away from home, you’ll bring your lovers here, right? You think I’m stupid? Ricardo's wife doesn't take her eyes off you. The dumbass doesn't even notice. But I see everything and I take action. You're nothing but a scoundrel who used me to get where you are. Everything you've achieved was because of me. For my money — she beat her chest — If it weren't for it, you wouldn't have graduated and gotten that shitty job. Admit that you can't live without me. I'm the air you breathe, Tiago.
— This isn't working, Adriana. I don't know what happened, but you've changed a lot. I...
— If you say you're going to leave me, I'll kill you, understand? I won't let you throw me away after you've used me. Marriage is a serious thing and ours will be forever. Understand? — She pointed her finger at me and then locked herself in the room.
I don't know if Adriana was like this before we met or if something caused all that anger. I talked to a psychiatrist and scheduled an appointment for her. I still loved her, even though our relationship was practically ruined due to her extreme jealousy. We could no longer go out for a simple trip to the mall without ending up in a huge fight. When she found out I had scheduled the appointment, she simply went crazy.
— I get it. You want to prove that I'm crazy. You're going to lock me up and take everything that's mine, aren't you? My father warned me not to marry someone like you. But that's not going to happen, darling.
I won't go on and on about all the hell we've been through in the last five years, including the psychological torments I've suffered. I swear I tried, but there comes a time when it's impossible to continue. Somehow, fate took it upon itself to separate us. I won't lie that I felt immense relief when I got rid of that bond. Over time, I re-learned how to live and, since I was still young, I tried to rebuild my life. However, Adriana didn't seem to accept it. She started stalking me. Maybe I gave her a reason to when, after meeting Julia, I stopped caring so much about her.
There's nothing like a new love to forget another! Julia was cheerful and fun, excellent company. We started dating without me telling her about Adriana. For me, it was a past I wanted to forget. But it couldn't be that way. We were in a restaurant and, when I was thinking about inviting Julia to live with me, i raised my glass of wine iniciating a toast and I looked at the entrance and there was Adriana. Her gaze was terrifying and I could feel, even from a distance, the hatred emanating from it.
I put down the glass, disappointing Julia, who was scrutinizing me with a look somewhere between worried and amused. Maybe she was expecting a marriage proposal, but the magic of the moment was lost. I looked back at the entrance and Adriana stood close to the bar. I swallowed hard and, when the waiter approached, I asked for the bill.
Julia didn't understand why I hadn't ordered a dish. I paid for the expensive wine and, although I could see my girlfriend's disappointment, I wasn't going to tell her the reason for my outburst. I would take her home and make up some excuse. As we passed the bar, Adriana smiled happily, but her eyes were cruel.
While waiting for the car to be brought by the valet, she stood almost near us. I held my breath as I felt my heart race. I took the wheel, forgetting my manners. I didn't open the door for Julia and she got into the car with a clouded expression. She didn't say anything, but I could imagine what was going inside her head. At that point the night was already lost. I wasn’t in the mood for anything else. I left her and, when I got home, we argued on the phone. Rightfully so, she wanted to know who I was running away from. She was furious when she found out about Adriana. She accused me of using her to forget Adriana and other things i rather not say, but that hurt me a lot. What the hell do women want? What do they expect from us?
The next morning I went for a run in the park, trying to clear my head. It was a holiday. All Souls' Day. A day when I should pay homage to the dead, but I felt tired and anxious. With each touch of my sneakers on the stone sidewalk, my heart beat faster as I got into the rhythm of the run, relieving the tension from the night before. As I turned a corner of the park, through the trees, there was Adriana.
I pretended not to see her. I can't deny that I was scared. Her attitude was getting out of control again. I ran another lap, believing that if I ignored her, she would eventually come to her senses and go away, but there she was, spewing her hatred. I stopped abruptly and covered the distance that separated us in a few seconds:
— What do you think you're doing? — I asked suddenly, feeling anger take over me. She just stared at me, without saying a word. — You have to stop chasing me, understand? Enough! I can't take this anymore.
— Marriage is forever — she whispered, to my surprise.
I left her there and went back home, deep in thought. I had barely entered the living room when I received a phone call from a friend of Julia's. It seems that she had also gone for a walk and, while crossing the street, some drunk driver had run her over. Julia was dead and so was a part of me.
Something told me that Adriana had something to do with it. I questioned Julia’s friend until he told me what some witnesses had told the police. The driver swore that Julia had thrown herself in front of the car. I felt disoriented. Hours later, I was at the São Bento Cemetery, looking at my girlfriend covered in flowers. I can't describe the pain I felt. Suddenly, everything was meaningless.
The place was packed with people, but I didn't care. No one imagines burying a loved one. But there I was, mourning, being touched by strangers, watching family and friends mourn, saying goodbye to that girl who was once so full of life. My heart was numb, but when I looked to the other side of the grave, there she was. There was joy in her eyes. I quickened my pace and walked towards her.
— You did this, didn't you? — I shouted, not caring about the curious looks behind my back. She said nothing. He just smiled and, before I could turn around and whispered:
— Marriage is forever.
I left that place, feeling crazy. I walked through the gates, blinded by hate and pain, and didn’t even notice the car rushing up the street. Suddenly, everything went black. I woke up in a hospital bed with a metallic taste in my mouth.
—You’re finally awake! — the nurse exclaimed, smiling happily.
— What happened? How long have I been here? — I asked, a little disoriented.
— About three days. You were run over in front of the São Bento Cemetery. You had to undergo surgery. You almost died!
— I see... — I said, as the images of the impact came back to my mind, as well as the feeling of having been pushed.
— During my shift yesterday, your wife never left your side. You must be very loved.
I couldn't help but widen my eyes. The sharp pain in my head grew intense when I saw her in the corner of the room, lurking.
— Young lady! My girlfriend died three years ago — I said, seeing Adriana's angry look behind her.
— Died? What do you mean? I don't understand...
She stopped talking, as if she was deducing something. Then her eyes widened in terror. I noticed the scream die in her throat when she looked to the corner of the room and saw her there with a petrified look.
The poor nurse left the room in a hurry.
— Leave me alone, Adriana. Don’t come near me, for the love of God!
That terrifying look and cynical smile made my skin crawl. Somehow I knew I wouldn't get rid of her any time soon. I was a fool to believe I could.
— Go away. — Leave me alone — I said again, in a choked whisper.
She approached at the exact moment another nurse entered the room. The poor nurse stopped when she noticed that the tube, through which the IV drip with medication ran, began to bend, interrupting the flow, without her seeing the hand that was squeezing it. Nor did she see Adriana's hand enter my chest, holding my heart, making the machine beep, while i pictured myself hiding behind sunglasses and a hooded sweatshirt, as I snuck up behind her while she was walking distractedly, and pushing her in front of a bus that had just turned the corner.
She took her hand away from my heart and I realized that my act had been in vain. Adriana would stay with me forever and brought Julia with her, who began to materialize before my terrified eyes. I bit my lip. When you are not caught committing a crime, you think you are invincible and the second time becomes even easier.
— Go away. Leave me alone — I asked in despair.
They smiled and I turned my face away. Each of them positioned themselves next to my bedside. Maybe it would be better if I turned myself in. Only then would I have peace, even though it was all her fault.
— That won’t be necessary, my dear — Adriana whispered in my mind, making my head hurt immensely. — We will always be by your side.
— Leave me alone...
— I can’t. I told you: marriage is forever.
