The Vile Attack

The realm, Gardonia, was known for its unique landscapes and diverse cultures. It was the first realm in history governed by two different formidable rulers; Queen Alara to the South, and King Lucius, to the North.

Gardonia, was divided into two main sections that lived separately. No one knew how the division came about, but it looked like it was something ordained by the heavens. On the South side was the Iceland, rich in crystals and minerals unrivaled by any in existence. The houses were built with sparkling crystals, so magnificent in physique unlike anything anyone had ever seen before, and it was governed by her, the Snow Queen and keeper of the human inhabitants. They had no magic but were formidable fighters and hunters. To the North, however were large spread of lands crawling with magic, supernatural creatures from fairies to goblins to shifters, and others man can hardly imagine. It was rich in animals, lush with fruits, herbs, greenish pastures, and oozing with immense magic unparalleled by any in the history of magic. On this side of the lands, the magical creatures were ruled by the fiercest of all shapeshifters, the dragon king, Lucius.

Until recently, they found a way to coexist without any troubles, interacting and doing businesses together in harmony. But then, greed started to eat up the hearts of some people, and chaos broke out. Innocent lives were lost on both sides in the powerplay that ensued, threatening the bliss and balance of their beautiful realm.

To halt the chaos, find a balance in the wielding of power, and ensure peace prevails in the realm, the snow queen and dragon king joined forces in holy matrimony and ruled together in bliss. However, there were a few who didn't like the union between these two different species, and felt it was an abomination that needed to be uprooted from the base at all cost. Queen Alara's younger brother, Demon, was one of these hidden foes. His rage and displeasure was so intense and manic he started dabbling in magic when he stumbled upon the Book of Shadows; not just any kind, but the dark destructive kind. Demon's intentions were simple and fueled by evil, his only motive to bring down the reign of his sister and the dragon king. Demon had always envied his sister, and wished he was the one in charge. He always had the burning thirst for power, and wanted to be at the apex of the ruling tree. This burning need led him down the road of madness dipped in shadows and darkness. He became an evil monster, worse than the supernatural creatures he was trying to eradicate. He became lost to the good in the world and embraced the dark power that came with black magic.

No one, could reach him as he became more submerged in his greed and thirst for power. He kept to himself, and suddenly went off the radar, disappearing without a trace as his body began to change into something unsightly. He spent his days mastering his newfound power, and weeks building a new family; a dark monstrous army of different shapes and sizes, all from the pits of hell. He became the dark lord, king, puppeteer, you name it, of the dark army, and his sole plan was to wreck havoc and plunge Gardonia into destruction, creating a new age or world of darkness.

"Honey, you should come to bed soon," her husband, Lucius called out softly to her, making her jump out of her musings. It seemed to be happening more frequently these days, she getting lost in her thoughts was no new thing to her. After her brother disappeared without any word of warning, she couldn't help rehashing their last moments together. Something had seemed off about him, and he had seemed like a stranger to her. Nothing of the innocent boy she knew had been present. She could still recall their last dispute as if it happened yesterday and not a month ago.

"Alara, you can't accept this alliance. Marriage to that abnormal being is not the answer we need!"

"Please, do not call my husband-to-be abnormal. You need to show some respect, Demon."

"That's never going to happen, Alara! You need to call this obnoxious alliance off. This is not the way, big sister! We're simply too different–"

"But we're all Gardonians, and I need to protect our lands at all costs. You know this too, people are starting to fight for rights, power and territories, instead of working together to maintain the peace and tranquility of our realm. We might be different species, possess different gifts, talents, traits, strength and weaknesses, but there's no doubt we're one and belong to one realm. You can't deny this!" she had roared at him, pissed at his condescending disapproval.

"I see now you live in a fool's world–"

"Watch your mouth, Demon!" she had thundered at him, anger lacing her every world.

"You need to know you're wrong. You're making a big mistake, Alara. Those creatures ain't our friends, and need to be put down swiftly before they become a threat."

"They are no threats, if anything, based on what you're saying we're the threats to them."

"I see your mind is set on this foolishness, and listening to reason ain't in your book. You leave me no choice then, I will make you regret your choice, Alara. You will look for mercy but will not find none in sight. That, I promise you, big sister," he stormed out with a wicked glint in his eyes that sent a cold shiver down her back. That was the last time she laid eyes upon him, though unsettling news had traveled to her ears about his evil escapades. She truly hoped there were no truths to any of them. She sighed deeply, focusing on the present.

"I will be right with you, darling. Just give me a second," she needed to bottle up her feelings and misgivings about the absence of her brother and focus on her husband. She couldn't place her worries on his broad shoulders, because he already had enough on his plate to deal with. She got into bed with him and gave him a sweet kiss on the lips before turning on her side to allow him to snuggle her into his warmth. Her dragon king was always warm to the touch, which soothes and keeps the cold away. She sighed deeply with relish as he kissed her nape.

"Still no word from your brother." though it wasn't really a question, it sounded like one, so she responded softly.

"Nope. Nothing."

"I don't like the sound of that, should I find him? I can get some of my men to scout our lands for him. That is, if you approve."

"I do, you've my blessings."

"Good. Now, please try not to worry, get some sleep. Everything will work out and we'll find him soon."

She nodded and snuggled more into his warmth, allowing the lure of sleep to drag her under.

The next day brought in chaos, as news of some monstrous activities that wrecked havoc on the equilibrium of the realm reached their ears. Further questioning revealed some dark magic was in play, and some habitats and lives were lost, calling forth the rage of her husband who banned the use and practice of dark magic in their realm. But it seemed some people were asinine enough to ignore the rules of the king. She was disappointed and angry at the disheartened picture painted. The culprits needed to be brought to swift justice and penalized before all and sundry to deter others from breaking the laws.

"I will ride with you," she said in a voice that brooked no arguments. "Just give me a minute to ready myself."

"But it's not safe out there–"

"I'll be safe riding with you. Besides, I need to see the extent of the damage to our people. Please, don't deny me."

"Alright, promise me you'll think of your safety before acting."

"I promise," she affirmed with a nod, before rushing to her chamber to get ready. She dressed in her riding attire, and grabbed her crystal bows and arrows, just in case the need to defend and protect arose. Joining her husband, she watched him undress with three of his men before shifting into an enormous red dragon. The dragons of his men were big too, just not like Lucius, who was so magnificent and ribbed with thick muscles and tendons that stretched for miles. Deadly claws that could slash, draw blood and crack bones in seconds. She raised her gaze to stare at massive Jaws that glinted with the most lethal pearls she had encountered; pearls that shielded a bottomless pit of fire that can spill forth and incinerate any foe to ashes at drop of a hat or slightest provocation. He held her gaze and gave her a wicked smile before urging or should she say, daring her to take that step towards the edge with him. It would be her first ride on the back of such a magnificent creature. With a finesse that bellied her fright, she covered the distance between them and climbed his wings, using the momentum he provided to hop on his back. She held on to one of the protruding little horns that ran down his spine from his neck.

Flying on a dragon sent a thrilling rush through her senses, everything became clearer from that position and she could see how easily addictive it could become. It gave one a sense of freedom not found on land. She held on tight and enjoyed the ride, amazed at how warm she felt even though the wind was playing havoc with her senses. Soon they were alighting on a plot of ruin that seemed out of place, and quite didn't fit the picturesque beauty of Gardonia. Everything within their sight was burnt to ashes, and there were charred dismembered bodies scattered on every available surface making her queasy inside. The place reeked of death, and not the normal kind, but the hideous unexplainable kind. It was tainted with evil, the kind that makes one want to run and hide. She was still on her dragon's back and could easily feel the wrath tightening his powerful body. She patted him softly to comfort and prevent him from blowing off the handle with fury.

"I know what you're feeling, this is cruelty in its highest esteem," her words were barely out of her mouth when suddenly the ground beneath their feet's started to tremble like an earthquake was being birthed, and then unholy roars filled their ears as they witnessed sheer madness been borne. Approaching them on foot and on dark skeletal horserides were the living dead and creatures whose monstrosity has no name. She had never seen anything like them before. Sure, she had seen creatures of various species, for crying out loud her kingdom was crawling with them. But, that right there was monstrosity on a whole different scale. There were creatures spotting six horns, multiple horrendous scary eyes, scaly skins, snaky tails and fangs. The abnormalities before her was humongous, and left her gobsmacked, and not the good kind. She was scared. She was really scared. Her heart suddenly stopped when a shadowy figure rode on foggy dark clouds towards them, and shot an arrow cloaked in swirling darkness at Lucius, throwing him into a screeching painful madness that almost threw her off balance. She had the devil's work keeping her balance.

"It's an ambush! We need to leave now!" she yelled, panic fueling her movements as she urged her husband to take flight through his pain. Though the ride back home was a bumpy one, she couldn't shake the feeling that she knew the ring leader of the monsters. She could still recall the stare they shared. The cold glint of his icy blue eyes had given her shivers down her back, and his malicious smirk had hit a familiar chord within her. It was her brother, Demon. He was the culprit behind the slaughters, and now, the attack on her husband. As they raced for home, she couldn't shake the foreboding that whatever had occurred was just a tip of the iceberg. That gloomy being that commanded thousands of ungodly army wasn't really the brother she knew. He was different, lost to the obsessive influence of dark magic, and he was coming for them as promised. They needed to prepare for the battle of their life, and she had a kingdom, subjects, and loved ones to protect.

After barely making it to their castle on the hill, her husband shifter into his human form, but couldn't rid himself of the dark arrow that seemed to be spreading poison through his veins. One of his knight tried to remove it but was stopped by her. "No one touches him, removing the arrow might spread the poison faster and kill him. Bring the royal healer to me now!" she issued loudly, fear squeezing her heart. Lucius, was slowly losing his color which was alarming because he heals faster than anyone she knew, but it was obvious something was wrong this time. She had to save her husband at all cost.

"Why isn't he healing?" one of Lucius men who flew with them asked.

"Dark magic," she replied, then sighed in relief when the royal healer arrived. "Please, do everything to safe him. I think the arrow is tainted with dark magic, and it's preventing him from healing."

"Don't worry, I'll save him–" they were suddenly interrupted by the frantic sounds of the castle's alarm bells, which meant the castle was under attack. She needed to prepare to defend her castle and people. But how could she leave Lucius in this condition?

"Y... You need to go. But first, help me up, please." She assisted her husband to sit, and watched him slit his wrist with his claw.

"What are you doing?" she questioned, petrified for him.

"You need strength, and my blood packs a punch. Drink some and use the rest to coat your weapons and that of your finest guards. Don't worry, the poison hasn't infected it, but prevents me to heal so I die an excruciating death. You need to defend our territory from your evil brother," she gasped in shock at his words. "You wonder how I knew? I have got a keen sight and great sense of smell. I knew from the moment I saw him. My people would rally behind you and protect you with their lives. You need to know that creature out there is not your brother, but a threat to all we've have labored so hard to build. You mustn't falter in taking him down. Promise me, you will return safe and victorious. Promise me."

"I promise to win this battle for us and our people. You need to promise me too, you'll recover from this attack. I want to see you well when I return. Don't you dare die in my absence."

"I won't. Now, go. Axel, protect my queen out there." Axel nodded and bowed at King Lucius, while she bid him farewell and commanded they take him to the hidden underground chamber to be treated.

She did as Lucius advices, drank his blood and coated most of their weapons with it. She felt different as his magical essence washed over her and strengthened her from within. She called out her feral pet; a magical wolf which was a wedding gift from her husband. "We've a war to win," she whispered and jumped on its back. Together they exited the castle with her royal army flanking her. They were now at the heart of things, several yards from the enemy threatening their safety and peace.

They were in a standoff position with her brother taking the lead on the opposing side. She still couldn't believe he allowed hatred and anger to control his life and lead him on a destructive path. Those people didn't deserve to die such an horrible death. They were innocent and harmed nobody. Being different wasn't an excuse for execution. She would never forgive him for hurting her subjects. Never!

She roared and charged forward with her unified army of elves, humans, shifters, goblins, fairies among others. They clashed in a thunderous impact with the enemy, her crystal sword cutting any that came her way down. She was shocked to see the power oozing from her opponents. It seemed her brother had upped his game and had this little minions shooting daggers of poisonous smoke from their fingers and mouths. There were hideous creatures with two heads and the swift ability to regenerate and multiply which annoyed the hell out of her, Zombies who could suck the life out of you with a touch, walking skeletal beings with the ability to turn you into them, humongous serpents who spits out acidic gooey stuff that melts the flesh off one skin, and Demon, the king of the monsters whose presence and look could bring the toughest of them all to his knees. But she would face him and destroy him for every life lost.

"Cover me! I'm going for their leader!" she yelled above the clashing swords, cracking bones and, squelching sounds of fleshes been torn and chewed and bodies been stomped upon. "Let's do this," she whispered to her wolf whose pristine coat is now bloodied with dark essence, and leaned forward on her vicious pet, Tundra. She grunted at the impact that traveled through her body, as Tundra hit one foe after another out of their way and tried not to fall off her ride. Finally, she stood before her target and couldn't believe the dark lord with rotting flesh riding a small dark cloud was really her brother.

What happened to him? How could he allow himself to become that– that thing. He had become more gruesome than the creatures he detested.

"So we meet again, big sister," he gloated in a guttural voice without opening his mouth. So he was communicating through her mind. "I told you, I will make you regret your decision–"

"And I will make you eat your words."

"Well, you can try, Your throne will be mine!" he chuckled wickedly at her.

"Don't bank on it. Your miserable life ends here!" she charged at him, hitting him hard with everything she got, but he thwarted her attack as if it was nothing, feinting every hit she meted out with her sword. But she wasn't disheartened, she had another ace up her sleeves and needed him to feel he was invisible and untouchable, that would make him pompous and give her the opening to get closer to him. Combating with him revealed he wasn't an easy foe to defeat, and using her brains was the only chance she got to winning, not brutal force because he had it in spades. So she played dumb and weak, allowed him to hit her with his shadowy spell and grunted aloud at the sheer pain. She panicked when Tundra tried to intercept and take a blow for her. She managed to push Tundra out of the way and cried in pain at the assault. Demon then kicked her sides severally which made her whole body to burn, then grabbed her by the neck and forced her to her feet. Painful tears escaped her eyes as she tried to find her bearings and work through the fuzziness clouding her mind. She had a promise to keep, and didn't plan to allow Demon to have the final word. She would protect her kingdom from her excuse of a brother.

"Not so tough now, are you?" he squeezed her neck harder and she tried not to lose touch with reality. Just a few seconds more and victory will be hers. Gathering all her courage, she shook her right sleeve and allowed the dagger hidden there to slip free into her hand, then she rammed it hard into his heart. She dropped to the hard ground as he screeched like a banshee in pain and started to deteriorate into dust. She coughed as she struggled to her feet. "I hope it was worth it in the end, bastard," she spat on his ashes and released a sigh as all his minions turned into dust, vanishing from their sight. Everything fell into its original place, and the warriors they lost all came back to life, as she suspected. Even the wounds she got for her troubles healed, which meant Lucius would be safe. It was really a miracle.

Jumping back on her wolf, she rushed back home to celebrate their victory with her dragon king. Gardonia, was safe from ruin. Thank goodness!
