Terrible Book Boyfriends and Husbands

Kay Joy Fagin stumbled in her mermaid-style wedding dress down the hall of The Glass Trumpet Hotel and Casino, tears stinging her eyes.

Peter rushed past her.

Betty, a curvy redhead, ran after him. “Honey, it’s a misunderstanding.”

Peter ignored her and turned to Kay. The five-foot-three man stopped, handed her a tissue from his pocket, and embraced her. “I’m so sorry this happened.”

“Keep away from my man!” Betty screamed at Kay. “You’re trying to steal Peter from me. Bet that is why Marcus left you at the altar.”

“You and I aren’t dating, I dumped you, and I can hug anyone I want,” he snapped.

“But you’re supposed to fight for me.” Betty stomped after him. “I’m more important.”

“Go kiss my brother! I don’t care.” Peter stormed off.

Kay walked past gamblers plunking coins, and they didn’t look up at her.

Her sister followed her. Daisy was at least two inches shorter, and her fairy wings grew in, unlike Kay’s, who‌ still possessed knobby stumps.

Kay was without wings, magic, or a groom. Her book boyfriend would never be her book husband. He came to life just to break her heart.

Broken crystals and feathers in her tiara fell behind her as she moved, creating a path for others to follow.

Kay entered the gold room, where her guests were seated. A crystal chandler illuminated the bougie event.

Gold cloth covered everything except the buffet. It looked tacky but was formed from real gold thread.

The glass buffet table was filled with food from a high-end catering service.

Each tray held something fancy, like caviar, tea sandwiches, or lobster salad. None of the food was warm, including the world’s most expensive cinnamon chicken.

Kay craved chicken nuggets or a slice of pizza.

“I’m sure he’ll show up,” Daisy, Kay’s sister, whispered from behind. The woman’s fairy wings beat, and she floated above the rug. “I brought yours and twenty other authors’ main characters to life. I thought one was destined to be an authentic romance.”

“Our wedding was supposed to be three hours ago. Book love is not the same as the real thing.” Kay’s phone rang, and she opened her beaded purse. She set her cell phone on speaker mode, and the wedding guests heard. She didn’t care if he humiliated her.

Marcus spoke softly over the phone. “Hey, babe, I’ve been seeing the president of your fan club, but I really want Georgia. You wrote her, and I need to find her.”

“But I’m Georgia. She’s a self-insert.” Kay sat on a chair, decorated with gold lace for the wedding.

A few of her guests surrounded the table and booed him.

Marcus snorted. “Georgia is pretty, and all the guys are fighting over her. I’d say you’re more like Carol. Mooning after guys who aren’t interested. I’m a famous werewolf billionaire; why would I choose you?”

Of course, her book boyfriend jilted her, and Kay ended up being Carol in her own romance story. Kay snatched a handful of 100-dollar mints from the table. She ate one.

“She’s lovely,” Peter said softly, but loud enough for Marcus to hear.

“My sister is a famous romance novelist. You’re a cheating scumbag,” Daisy snapped.

“No, I’m broken, and only Georgia can fix me,” Marcus said. “And I paid for the wedding because that is the kind of sweetheart I am.”

“My wings will only appear when I find true love. I should’ve known it wasn’t you,” Kay said.

He hung up.

Daisy spoke to her sister. “You wrote three series. One of them has to be your true love.”

A muscular beauty vampire approached, tears in his eyes. “You’re the one I have been searching for.”

Kay slammed her fist on the table. “Go away! You just plan to drain my beauty because you like to manipulate awkward teens.”

“Vespa is 19 and not a child.” Tears fell from his eyes. “And I never kill. You’re undeserving of beauty and have an ugly soul.”

“My sister based Vespa on herself in high school, and you’re a toad. She published it when she was 17 and didn’t know any better. You were cute on the page. My sister volunteers at the animal hospital, art center, and is genuinely kind. You’re undeserving.” Daisy forced her sister to write a note.

The handsome man transformed into a lovely beast. “And I made you a beauty giver. You have no right to tell any woman she is not worth love or beauty.”

The beauty vampire ran away.

Peter approached them, and his awful date clung to his arm.

He tried to steady his plate of sandwiches and cinnamon chicken.

Betty walked off and kissed Peter’s brother.

Peter spoke in a hushed tone. “Daisy, I was joking when I asked you to bring Betty to life. Can you get rid of her?” His eyes sparkled under the light. “I thought I created the nicest girl, but her actions are the exact opposite.” Peter turned two shades of red. “She is clingy, stole from my mom, kissed my brother, and lied to her boss, and I don’t want her. Her friends, which I wrote, by the way, tell her she is wonderful and not manipulative.”

Daisy’s wings fluttered. “No, she is alive, and both you and my sister wished for this. And she has some freedom over her behavior. Betty is choosing to be even more horrible. Her cheating is not in your book.”

“I don’t want to hurt her.” Peter set his plate down. “But the more time I spend with her, the more I realize I don’t know how to write about women. I’ve dumped Betty three times,” he said loudly. “I realized I’ve been attracted to true love blockers. They're girls that never really want to date you, but sabotage every relationship their male friends have because they want men to pine over them.”

Betty walked back. “What do you mean, you don’t love me? I’m absolutely perfect. Look, I’ll do better.”

“Nope,” Peter said. “We’re not even friends anymore.”

“Fine!” Betty walked over to the buffet and grabbed a plate of cucumber sandwiches for herself. She kissed Peter’s brother.

Peter sat in the spot reserved for Marcus. “She’s his nightmare now.”

Kay hugged him. “I have an idea! We write a book together and publish it. Fans will hate it, but it’ll solve our problems.”

“Like how?” He reached for a tea sandwich.

“Georgia dumps Marcus because she realizes he’s a jerk. He runs his daddy’s company into the ground because it’s bound to happen. Georgia saves the company. Both he and Betty have to work for a living. They find out they’re cursed and have to do 5,000 kind deeds. They need to fix themselves, love can’t do that. Carol finds true love with Georgia’s brother.”

Peter laughed. “I think if we make it funny, fans will read it. This could be a romantasy series. But I think Carol should end up with a nerdy science fiction author who might have a crush on her.” He stopped speaking for a moment. “Kay, you look beautiful tonight.” He handed her one of the sandwiches with his free hand. “I doubt you’ve eaten.”

She ate it, and the cream filling lingered on her tongue.

He smiled and fumbled for his phone. “Let’s take notes. This might take weeks of planning.”

She touched his arm. “We’ll have to spend so much time together.”

Small, unseen feathers started to form on their backs, and they didn’t know what their powers would be, not that it mattered.
