CHAPTER 1 - THE CALL OF THE MEADOW
Chapter 1
As Robert and Nicole continued their journey through the arid plains of Texas, the sun beat down on them relentlessly. The scorching heat made the air feel heavy and suffocating inside their car.
Robert wiped the sweat off his brow with the back of his hand, his grip tightening on the steering wheel. "This heat is unbearable," he muttered, squinting through the windshield at the barren landscape stretching before them.
Nicole nodded in agreement, her long dark hair sticking to her forehead. "I can't wait to find some shade," she said, fanning herself with a map.
Just as they were starting to lose hope, dark clouds gathered overhead, casting a shadow over the vast expanse. Thunder rumbled in the distance, and raindrops began to splatter against the windshield.
Robert turned on the windshield wipers, but they struggled to keep up with the sudden deluge. The rain poured down in torrents, making it almost impossible to see the road ahead.
"We need to find shelter," Robert shouted over the roar of the rain.
Nicole peered out through the water-streaked window, her eyes scanning the horizon for any signs of refuge. And then she spotted it. A dilapidated building stood alone on the side of the road, its flickering sign barely visible in the downpour. "Look! There!" she exclaimed, pointing ahead.
Robert's eyes followed her finger, and relief washed over him. "An old bookstore," he said, his voice filled with gratitude. "Thank goodness."
They quickly veered off the road and parked their car near the entrance of the bookstore, their hearts pounding with anticipation. The rain poured down around them as they rushed out of the car and made a dash for cover.
The moment they stepped inside, they were greeted by the sight of towering bookshelves filled with weathered volumes. The smell of aged paper and ink filled the air, enveloping them in a comforting embrace.

its enchanting embrace.
