Female genital mutilation knowledge, attitude and practices in the Nigeria society.

Before we start, we must first know the meaning of female genital mutilation, because due to insecurity in the country and lack of information has prompt many female , most of which are females in their teens and mothers , who supposed to know about the dangers and effects , but couldn’t due to lack of information , that why I urge you all to pay attention most especially the females who have little or no knowledge about this ,because this act violates human right of girls and woman , but to our greatest surprise our country is not only effected but the world , more than 200 million girls and women alive today have been cut in 30 countries in Africa , the middle east and Asia where this FGM is concentrated .

The term female genital mutilation popularly known as (FGM) is the procedure performed on a female child to alter or injure her genitalia for non –medical reasons which have no health benefits. Research has showed that FGM popularly known as female genital mutilation is mostly carried out on infancy and young adult between age 15 and 49 and sure practice is mostly carried out by traditional circumcisers, who often play other central roles in communities , such as attending childbirths . in many settings , health care providers perform FGM due to the belief that the procedure is safer when medicalized . WHO strongly urges health care providers not to perform FGM .let come home the state with the highest number of FGM practice is no other place but the people of Benin, rich culture and popularly known as the ancient city , due to their cultural believes takes FGM as mainly a cultural act , but to my greatest surprise even the so called educated people who suppose to educate the uneducated are found in such act , hmmmm what a pity , due to research have show that almost half of the nurses have had FGM themselves and a small percentage recommend it to their daughters , this show that even the educated can be affect.

Due to research have showed that FGM popularly known as Female genital mutilation can be classified into four types .

Type 1 :this is the partial or total removal of the clitoral glans ( the external and visible part of the clitoris which is a sensitive part of the female genitals ) .

Type2: this is the partial or total removal of the labia minora (the inner folds of the vulva)

Type3: also known as infibulations , this is the narrowing of the vaginal opening through the creation of a covering seal . the seal is formed by cutting and repositioning the labia minora or labia majora, sometimes through stitching , with or without removal of the clitoral .

Type 4: this includes all other harmful procedures to the female genitalia for non -medical purposes, e.g. pricking, piercing, incising, scraping and cauterizing the genital area.

Research has show that many culture performed this ungodly act as a way of caging their girls to reduce the way there follow men but to our greatest surprise that is wrong. instrument used in carry out this ungodly or unholy act are knives , scissors , scalpels , pieces of glass or razor blades and in communities where infibulations is practices girls legs are often bound together to immobilize them for 10 -14 days , allowing the formation of scar tissue , you can imagine , we have to know that everything have a beginning but the trust is that the origin of FGM is unclear but some county , which have ancient believe has been pinpointed out ,we have the Egyptian mummies who display characteristic of FGM. We have historians’ such as Herodotus claim that in the fifth century BC , the Phoenicians, the Hittites even the tropical zone of Africa and by certain tribes in the upper Amazon by women of arutar tribe in Australia and even early Romans and Arabs and to mention a few ,that the practices of FGM has been followed by many different people and societies across the ages and continents .

EFFECT OF FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION.

We have to known that FGM have two parts one is the long term and the other is the short them: but first let talk about the shout them.FGM have serious implication for sexual and reproductive health of girls and women , which can have a long consequences , one of the effect of FGM ,we have :

(1) Severe pain.

(2)Shock.

(3)Haemorrhage (excessive bleeding).

(4) Urine retention.

(5) Wound infection. This can cause death.

Now for long term effect, we have:

(1) Complication during childbirth.

(2) Anaemia.

(3) Keloid scar formation damage of the urethra resulting in urinary incontinence.

(4) Pain in sexual intercourse.

(5) Risk of HIV transmission and finally psychological effect.

Women who undergone this act are more likely to suffer from prolonged and obstructed labour and sometimes resulting in fetal death and obstetric fistula and infants that undergoes such ungodly act are at risk of losing their own life.

So we ask, why the risk? , why the pains to our sisters and mothers? Why should such asked be in place In our modern age, Education is power, Education is knowledge, Education is life, that why I urge you all to stand with me to say NO, NO TO FGM, NO,NO TO FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION because it has no health benefits, no traditional benefits, no spiritual benefits, only harm.
