// This week I´d like to recommend you “I, Claudius” by Robert Graves. This is a literary-historical novel about the roman emperor Claudio which is narrated in the first person; this means that Graves writes an autobiography of other human being and that he gives his voice to the emperor. Also, he relates a bit of Caligula´s life. This feature fascinated me because I could know him since his childhood and I could understand -to a certain point- the crazy decisions he took when he got the emperor's position. The banquets and dinners from that time were composed by sweet or sour plums, cheeses, olives, wild-boars, truffles, beer and wine. The most interesting gastronomy part of the novel appears in one of the Claudio´s confessions at the beginning of it , in which Graves explains what were the very first Claudio´s obligations as emperor. Graves writes this delightful explanation in almost two pages, that´s why I will paraphrase: the most important obligation for a roman emperor at that time was the dining room arrangement, the supplies purchase and the rules for receiving guests. ¡This is, definitely, charming!
