Coyote's Good Friends

Watching the trees rustling in the breeze against the deep blue sky keeps Ethan calm as he contemplates his next move. In a spot away from prying eyes, he set up a picnic between a group of trees and shrubs where the grass was overgrown. He was able to stamp it down with his blanket, but it was a long way from being flat. This is where he waited, listening to the distant sounds of people playing.

Within a few minutes, a familiar face obscures his view and quickens his pulse. Her dark eyes accent her fiery red hair as well as her sassy demeanor. “Hey, Wanda. Glad you could make it,” says Ethan, sitting up on the blanket splayed across the grass.

“Yeah, you're lucky I have time between classes today, Ethan. I'm sure it'll be worth it, though, right?” Wanda eyes Ethan from above, enjoying the sense of superiority she gets from standing over him. His loose clothes hide the solid body underneath rather well and his soft demeanor makes him look like a prime target in her eyes. It makes her want to pounce on him as he looks defenseless.

“Yep.” Ethan gestures toward the food and snacks practically spilling out of the basket he prepared. “I have some good food here, let's just dig in.”

Excitedly, Wanda drops down onto the blanket. “Don't mind if I do.” Proceeding to gorge herself, she looks forward to what’s coming next. Once the food is all but gone, she speaks again. “That was pretty good. You went all out on that, huh?” With a seductive glare, she lowers her tone and says, “Now, it's my turn to return the favor.”

Nearly taken in by his girlfriend’s allure, Ethan stays true to his intentions. Nervously, he says, “Well, that's not really why I invited you here...”

Nearly shocked by his admission, Wanda suppresses a laugh, thinking it’s a joke. “You called me to a secluded spot and fed me, to not fuck me?” she says, sarcastically.

“I'm serious.”

“Alright, what is it, baby? This is so unlike you.” An improbable thought strikes her mind, making her gasp. “Is the sex getting stale?”

Still nervous, Ethan says, “No, well, kinda. I, um... I don't know how to say this, but I think... I, uh...”

“You want to break up?” The statement feels just as outlandish to Wanda, but was also where her mind went.

Apprehensively, Ethan says, “Yeah…”

Wanda sighs, allowing the thought to settle. “Alright. You put in all this effort to let me down easy, and here I was just trying to fuck your brains out one last time before saying the same thing.”

Surprised, Ethan says, “What?”

“Yeah, I wanted to break up, too. I'm kinda relieved, honestly. I sorta fell for someone else. I know it's not right when you're in a relationship, so I was going to end it.”

“You, too?”

Now more comfortable with the idea, Wanda becomes more playful. “I take it to mean you found someone better than me?”

“I'd rather not answer that,” says Ethan, just speaking his mind at this point.

“Same.” Wanda agrees. “I kinda wanted that last fuck, but let's just agree we're both missing out and split, yeah?”

“Yeah, no break-up sex.”

The next day, Wanda is sitting inside a local coffee shop with her friend Colt, who goes by Coyote. The cozy, bustling environment of the coffee shop often helps put Wanda’s mind at ease. Colt also helps a lot since they're always willing to lend an ear to whatever ails her. While this time, most of what she has to vent is incomprehensible since she speaks her mind so freely and quickly, but the important parts are easy to understand.

“So, he invited me to this quiet spot in the park, and here I thought it was for some freaky time, but no, it was so he could let me down easy. He broke up with me. Can you believe that? And he has the audacity to plan the whole thing out and make me feel like an asshole. Am I the asshole?”

Attempting to calm their friend, Colt says, “I'm sure he had his reasons. Besides, you said it was a secluded spot, right?”

“Well, maybe he just didn't want to hurt your feelings too badly. Or he didn't want you making a scene.”

“I don't make scenes.”

“You're making a scene right now.”

“Don't gaslight me, Coyote, I'm hurt enough already.”

Coyote shrugs. “Well, you were going to break up with him anyway, right?”

“But you're mad he did it first?” Colt raises an accusatory eyebrow.

“Whose side are you on?” Wanda whines.

Colt giggles. “I'm just saying. Besides, who is he anyway? After all this time, he's still a mystery guy.” Colt’s curiosity came from knowing how often women spoke about things and it made them curious as to why Wanda never told them about her now ex-boyfriend.

“Nobody you're ever going to meet, trust me. He lives off campus and you only go here and home when you're not in class, anyway.”

Colt puffs up their chest proudly and says, “The life of an introvert.”

“Besides, he wouldn't be interested. All he wants is sex all the time, anyway. Whoever he found must be better at it than me. You're cute, but he wouldn't go for a virgin.”

This comment blows any wind Colt had out of their sails. ”Damn, Wanda, I'm just curious. No need to go for the jugular.”

Checking the time on her phone, Wanda stands. “Alright, I gotta get to class. See you later.”

“See you.” Now alone, Colt takes the time to enjoy their coffee and think to themself. ‘Well, if she's single now, I could probably introduce her to Ethan. They seem like they'd get along. They like the same stuff, anyway. I wonder if he broke up with his girlfriend like he said he was going to.’

Having spotted the pair talking through the window of the coffee shop, Ethan enters once Wanda’s gone and approaches Colt. “Hey, Coyote, long time, no see.”

Surprised to see him there so early, Colt responds, “Hey, Ethan. I was just thinking about you. Why are you here so early? I thought you only come here in the afternoon.”

With a shrug, Ethan says, “Well, I normally have stuff to do in the morning, but I saw you and thought I'd drop in for some Colt-action.”

With a giggle, Colt says, “Like a gun?”

“Yeah. So, what's up with that girl that just left? You hitting that?” Ethan cocks his head toward the window as he sits across from Colt.

“No, she’s just a friend.”

Ethan shrugs again. “Eh, thought so. Well, I just broke up with my girlfriend.”

“Oh, you finally did it, huh?”

“Yeah, it took some courage, but I got it done. There's only so much a man can do when the whole relationship revolves around sex, you know?” Ethan looks up wistfully for a moment.

“Yeah, no... I wouldn't know.” Colt awkwardly sips their coffee.

“Don't worry, you'll lose that V-card of yours eventually. Can't stay a virgin forever, you know?”

“Sure…” says Coyote, sheepishly, unsure how to respond.

“Or maybe you should keep it close to your vest for a while longer. My ex was all about sex. She couldn't get enough of it, and it got really hard to keep up. She was so needy. I probably was, too, a little, but damn.”

Colt resists the urge to roll their eyes. “I know, you told me before.”

“I know, I know, but it feels great to say it after I'm already free of her. Turns out, she already had someone else lined up. Was probably fucking him behind my back, anyway.”

Finding themselves very uncomfortable, Colt tries to turn the conversation a bit. “Oh, um... No need to dwell on it, though. Right?”

“Right. Well, I'll have a black coffee. Today feels like a good day for one.” Ethan looks at Colt expectedly.

Colt gestures toward one of the waiters moving about. “Well, tell the waiter. Don't let me hold you up.”

“You're not paying?” Ethan gives a cheeky smile, well aware of the employee discount Colt gets since they work at the coffee shop.

“I’m not your caretaker,” says Colt, as sassy as possible.

Ethan chuckles and pays for his own drink. Later in the day, Ethan finds himself walking home through the park on campus. On the way, he spots Wanda, taking the same path. They would normally take this path home together, but now that they're broken up, it only remains a shared habit. Wanda notices him first and approaches him as they keep going in the same direction. “Hey, Ethan, I saw you hanging out at that coffee shop earlier today. Who was that little friend of yours?

Playing it cool, he says, “Just a friend. I saw you there, too. You know each other?”

“Only since grade school. What about you?” Wanda was also playing it cool.

“High school. Small world, huh?”

“Yeah... Small world. You don't talk about me, do you?”

“Why would I? I mean, you were my girlfriend, but you never came up in conversation, so no.”

Trying for a more casual tone than normal, Wanda said, “Really? Coyote asks me about you pretty often.”

Ethan raises his eyebrow. “Or do you just talk a lot, prompting them to ask?”

With a smirk, Wanda says, “I don't like your accusations. Besides, based on that, I don't think they know we were dating until now. Isn't that funny?”

“It just makes me glad we split on good terms. Say, you wouldn't happen to actually say my name at any point while talking to them, right?”

“No, I didn't think it was important.”

Sarcastically, Ethan called her bluff. “Sure. And you didn't complain about the break-up?”

Surprised, Wanda outburst, “How did you know about that?”

Ethan chuckles. “Don't worry, I had my fair share of complaints, too.”

“Okay, wise-ass, who is this mystery woman that's supposed to replace me? I'm curious as to who can fuck you better than I can.” Despite her words, Wanda falls back on her thoughts. ‘It can't be Coyote, they're a virgin. Then again, that might be it. He wants their virginity.’

“All in due time, my dear. I'm also curious as to who you're replacing me with.” Just like Wanda, Ethan's mind falls back on his assumptions despite his words. ‘It couldn't be Coyote, could it? Not if I have anything to say about it. That woman would fuck anything that moves. I gotta get to them first.’

With a note of sass, Wanda responds, “Like you said, in due time.” She pushes her hair behind her ear while she speaks as her thoughts run amok. ‘It's definitely Coyote. He wouldn't be just friends with someone like that for so long and not try to get in their pants. I should have made my move a long time ago.’

The pair continue to walk until they eventually split at the crossroads leading to their homes. All the while thinking about how to capture Colt’s affection first.
