"Do whatever you want!"
How many times have I heard that phrase! Thousands of times in my life, always laden with aggression, weariness, or irritation. Almost always as the final word in an argument, with a deeply negative connotation.
"Do whatever you want. Whatever you feel like."
As a disdain for the rebellion of wanting something different from the other person. With a hidden message insinuating that what I desired wasn't what I should desire. Always submissive, always insecure, that phrase was an implacable paralyzer. In an instant, I would forget what I originally wanted. Only the certainty remained that if I heard that, then I had to change my mind. Until that day.
"The day the girl rebelled," my friend Dani often says. I prefer to say that I revolutionized, I stirred myself up. But above all, I listened: DO WHATEVER YOU WANT. And I freed those four words from tons of useless baggage. I stripped them of prejudices, left them sterile of others' emotions. I realized that it wasn't so complicated to transform that threat into an invitation.
So, in that decisive moment, I decided to change my perspective. Instead of letting those words crush me, I embraced them as a challenge. I realized that they had the power I gave them. So, instead of feeling bound by them, I turned them into my liberation.
